Directorate of Economics & Statistics is gearing up to disseminate microdatafor public use

 

Bhubaneswar, 22/11/2025 ( Odisha Samachar/Rajat Mohapatra)-The Directorate of Economics & Statistics (DE&S), Odisha, under the Planning & Convergence Department, has successfully concluded a Phase-II, five-day advanced training programme on the implementation of the Data Catalogue using the NADA (National Data Archive) platform. The programme was held from 17th to 21st November 2025 at the NabakrushnaChoudhury Centre for Development Studies (NCDS), Bhubaneswar. The training aimed to strengthen the State’s ability to organise and share its official data in a more systematic and user-friendly manner.

Throughout the five days, participants worked closely with international expert Mr. Somnath Sambhudas, who guided them through detailed exercises and demonstrations on datasets of the Directorate.The trainee participants learnt how to document datasets, describe survey methods, prepare metadata in the aim to publish micro data of various surveys like NSS, Price Statistics, Annual Survey of Industries, Minor Irrigation Census and Census of Water Bodies etc with relevant information through the NADA system. This initiative is a significant step towards enhancing transparency, efficiency, and accessibility in the state’s statistical systems.

The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Prakash Chandra Mohanty, Additional Secretary, Planning&Convergence Department with the presence of other dignitaries whose guidance set the direction for the week-long training, emphasising that data becomes more useful and meaningful when it is properly explained and made accessible to all users, regardless of their technical background.Diligent insights were delivered by Dr. B.B. Nanda who stressed the urgent need for transparent data dissemination frameworks to promote research and citizen engagement.

This capacity-building initiative forms an important part of the World Bank-supported Odisha State Capacity and Resilient Growth Programme (OSCRGP), which focuses on Strengthening of the State’s statistical systems. By investing in such training, the Government of Odisha aims to ensure that official data is accessible and easy to interpret for evidence-based planning and public use. The successful completion of this programme reflects the State’s commitment to adopting modern data management practices.

Odisha continues to lead in data dissemination efforts, being the first State in the country to operationalise the NADA platform for publishing government datasets. With the State Data Dissemination Policy and its guidelines already in place, DE&S remains dedicated to promoting openness and efficiency for sharing of official statistics. The completion of this training marks another significant step towards building a stronger and more accessible data ecosystem for the State.
