Pari murder case: Accused sentenced to 20-years rigorous imprisonment

Cuttack,6/2/2024 ( Odisha Samachar/ Rajat Mohapatra) : In a major success for Odisha Police, the Addl. District and Sessions Judge cum Children’s Court, Nayagarh has pronounced conviction judgement in sensational Pari murder case. The only juvenile accused has been awarded 20 years punishment in this case of rape and murder of a five- year-old girl child.

Delivering its judgement today, the learned court held the accused guilty and convicted him under section 363, 376AB, 302, 201 of IPC and section 6 of POSCO Act. He has been awarded 20 years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for rape under 376AB IPC and 6 POSCO Act and 20 years punishment for murder under section 302 IPC. Similarly, he is convicted for three years under section 363 and 201 IPC. Conviction terms shall run concurrently. His Under Trial Prisoner (UTP) period will be set off.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pari, a five-year-old, minor girl had gone missing on July 14, 2020 while playing outside her house in Jadupur village, Nayagarh. Ten days later, on July 23, 2020, the minor girl’s skeletal remains were found concealed under the bushes near a pond on the backside of the house of accused. Nayagarh District Police initially investigated the case. The case was later handed over to Crime Branch. CID-CB took charge of the investigation by the order of the Govt. on 25.11.2020 vide CID CB PS Case No. 14/2020 U/s 363, 364,302,201 of IPC.

Eventually, an SIT was constituted by the Govt. of Odisha under leadership of Sh. Arun Bothra, the then IGP, CID-Crime Branch to investigate the case vide Home Deptt. vide letter No. 2373/C dt. 28.11.2020. Other members of SIT were SP R.K. Dora, SP, Addl. SP R.C. Thamba, DSP and Investigating officer Sri Narendra Kumar Behera and Inspector Mamatarani Panda. The SIT submitted status reports before the Hon’ble High court on 15.12.2020, 23.12.2020 and 11.01.2021 and the Hon’ble High Court vide order dated 12.01.2021 made observation that a good progress was made by the SIT.

The investigators conducted through investigation using all scientific methods like layered Voice Analysis Test, Phycological Assessment Test, Polygraph test, DNA test and forensic examination of blood, semen stain and other available evidence including digital evidence. Some of these tests were conducted by experts from Central Forensics Science Laboratory, New Delhi and State Forensic Science Laboratory, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

From prosecution side the trial was conducted by Sri Chita Ranjan Kanungo (OSPS-I), Dy. Director, Prosecution. The prosecutors examined 31 witnesses, exhibited 135 documents and produced 18 material objects during trial of the case.
