National Conference on Digital Libraries and Information Systems Inaugurated at Berhampur University

Berhampur, March 4, 2025 ( Odisha Samachar) – The National Conference on “Digital Libraries and Information Systems: Building Universal Opportunities for Learning and Access” (DLISBUOLA) commenced at Berhampur University, marking a significant milestone in the field of Library and Information Science (LIS). Organized by the Department of Library and Information Science, Berhampur University, in collaboration with the Odisha Library Academy (OLA), the two-day conference brought together experts, academicians, and professionals to explore advancements in digital libraries and information systems.

The inaugural session, held at the New Conference Hall, Berhampur University, began with the university anthem Kula Sangeeta and a traditional Tulsi plant watering ceremony, symbolizing knowledge and growth. Tributes were paid to Padma Shri S. R. Ranganathan, the father of Library Science in India, and Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja, a revered Odia poet, followed by the felicitation of esteemed dignitaries.

Conference Director Prof. Jyotshna Sahoo set the tone with a warm welcome, emphasizing the importance of innovation and adaptation in Library and Information Science to meet the challenges of the digital era. Dr. Bibhuti Bhusan Sahoo, President of OLA and Convenor of the Conference, highlighted OLA’s role in empowering the LIS community, while Prof. S. K. Tripathy, Patron of the Conference, underscored Berhampur University’s growing national recognition through research initiatives and successful grants from UGC, DST, and DBT. Guest of Honour, Prof. K. C. Panda, Former Professor of Sambalpur University, discussed the evolving role of librarians in the digital landscape, emphasizing the need for continuous learning and technological adaptation.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Jagadish Arora, a renowned expert in digital libraries, delivered a thought-provoking keynote address. He highlighted the transformative impact of digital libraries, the challenges faced by LIS professionals, and the necessity for interdisciplinary research, collaboration, and advanced digital technologies to enhance research support services.

Prof. Geetanjali Dash, Chief Patron of the Conference, reflected on her efforts to modernize library facilities at Berhampur University. She emphasized the enduring relevance of print books, asserting that while digital resources are invaluable, they cannot entirely replace the immersive experience of physical books. The inaugural session concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Raj Kishore Kampa, Organizing Secretary, while Mr. B. K. Panda, Secretary of OLA, extended his gratitude during the valedictory session, acknowledging the invaluable contributions of the dignitaries, organizing committee, sponsors, and participants.

The conference featured technical and plenary sessions where LIS experts and researchers presented their insights on emerging trends, best practices, and future directions in digital libraries. Over 50 research papers were presented by scholars from nine different states, fostering rich academic discourse. A special highlight was the Lifetime Achievement Awards, conferred upon Prof. Pitambara Padhi and Prof. Krushna Chandra Panda for their outstanding contributions to LIS. Invited talks were delivered by esteemed professionals from premier institutes such as IIT, IOP, IISER, IMMT, SoA, and Kalyani University, further enriching the discussions.

The DLISBUOLA 2025 conference was a grand success, strengthening the Library Movement and boosting digital literacy in Odisha. The event not only fostered knowledge exchange but also reinforced the critical role of digital libraries in shaping the future of education and research.
