Bhubaneswar, 15 /6/2025 ( Odisha Samachar / Rajat Mohapatra )- India celebrates a moment of immense pride as Eminent Son of Odisha, Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology, India Meteorological Department (IMD), has been awarded the United Nations Sasakawa Award 2025 for Disaster Risk Reduction.
The theme for 2025, “Connecting science to people: Democratizing access to innovation and technology for disaster-resilient communities,” underscores the significance of Dr. Mohapatra’s ground breaking work in minimising deaths due to any cyclone over the north Indian Ocean region, not only in India, but also in 13 WMO/ESCAP Panel member countries bordering the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.
This accolade not only recognizes Dr. Mohapatra’s insightful leadership but also reaffirms India’s growing role in advancing global disaster risk management.
Dr. Mohapatra arrived today in Bhubaneswar on a visit to his teacher Prof. U. C. Mohanty after receiving the award. In this context he has been felicitated by the members of Indian Meteorological Society (IMS) Bhubaneswar Chapter and Science for Common People Society (SCOPES) in a meeting convened at the Conference Hall of Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar.
Prof. U. C. Mohanty, President of the SCOPES (Science for Common People Society/ ଜନ ବିଜ୍ଞାନ ସଂଗଠନ) described that this organization, promoted by SOA Deemed University, aims to bring the science from “Lab to Land” ensuring service of mankind. Dr. Mohapatra also opined that such an organization is the real need of the hour that can propagate the scientific knowledge amongst common people and this will ensure a climate resilient community.
The other eminent members present were Dr. Manorama Mohanty, Co-Chairperson of IMS-Bhubaneswar, Dr. Nihar Ranjan Das, Secretary, Dr. Mithun Karmakar from NHM-Odisha, Mr. Ajay Kumar Mahakud of SCOPES, Mr. R. K. Mohapatra of IMS etc.
