ICAR-CIFA organized Stakeholders’ Meet for Promoting Composite Carp Culture in Kandhamal

Kandhamal/Bhubaneswar,10 December, 2024( Odisha Samachar )-The ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA), Bhubaneswar, in collaboration with the Dept. of Fisheries, Govt. of Odisha, and supported by the DST (SEED Division), Govt. of India, organized a Stakeholders’ Meet in Kandhamal, Odisha. The event aimed at sharing the experiences gained through the project among the stakeholders and impacts of adopting this technology across the district.Since 2022, ICAR-CIFA, with support from the DST (SEED Division), Govt. of India, has been implementing a project aimed at economically empowering Scheduled Caste (SC) fish farmers, particularly women. The initiative focuses on promoting composite carp culture and carp seed production using scientific methods. Through this project, 220 SC fish farmers, farm women, including members of Women Self-Help Groups (WSHGs), have received training and guidance from the CIFA scientific team.Dr. S. N. Sethi, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFA, extended a warm welcome to the attendees. Mrs. Asalata Narendra, Assistant Fishries Officer, Kandhamal,  was the key speaker of this event. Mrs.Narendra, AFO, emphasized government schemes for fish farming, focusing on seed production technology and composite carp culture. She praised ICAR-CIFA’s role in empowering SC-targeted beneficiariesincluding WSHGs, improving fish production, and driving socioeconomic and nutritional growth.These initiatives showcase the integration of advanced aquaculture technologies and inclusive strategies for sustainable development and economic upliftment in rural communities.The meet saw active participation from around 200 beneficiaries, including 120 women from Women Self-Help Groups (WSHGs), 80 fish farmers, NGOs, Mission Shakti members, and government officials. The event offered participants valuable insights into various government schemes and incentives aimed at supporting fish farmers. The ICAR-CIFA scientific team, including Dr. G. S. Saha, Dr. C. K. Misra and Dr. S. N. Sethi delivered engaging sessions on the importance of adopting scientific aquaculture practices. Dr. Misra advocated reduced chemical use and promoting fish-based integrated farming as a sustainable livelihood option. He urged farmers to adopt judicious fish feed practices to enhance profitability while maintaining ecological balance. Dr. Saha encouraged diversification in aquaculture by incorporating other indegenous fish species. He also urged the farmers to join hands and form Farmer Producer Company in order to realize remunerative price for their produces. Mrs. JanamatiDigal expressed her gratitude towards ICAR-CIFA, acknowledging their support in helping her adopt scientific carp culture technology. She explained that this had enabled her to achieve threefold fish production, significantly enhancing her family’s income, empowering her socioeconomically, and ensuring better nutritional security. Her success highlights the impact of such institutional interventions on rural livelihoods.

This initiative reaffirms ICAR-CIFA’s commitment to empowering rural communities and promoting sustainable aquaculture practices for a brighter future.The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Sethi, marking the culmination of a day rich in knowledge exchange and empowerment.
