ICAR-CIFA organised a Scientist – Farmers interface program on Pig-cum-fish farming

 

Sarmeen Hanse (Assam) ,14/3/2024(Odisha Samachar )-  ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Kausalyaganga, Bhubaneswar, Odisha organised a Scientists – Farmers interface programme on Pig-cum-fish farming at Sarmeen Hanse, Karbi Anglong district of Assam on 13 March 2024 under NEH programme. The event was organised to improve the aquaculture productivity in the state of Assam through integrated pig-cum-fish farming. The event was attended by more than thirty participants including Scientists, extension officials and progressive farmers of Karbi Anglong district of Assam.

At the backdrop of the event, Dr Pramoda Kumar Sahoo, Director of ICAR-CIFA suggested for improving the aquaculture productivity through integration of aqua ponds with pig farming. Dr S Adhikari, Principal Scientist and Coordinator of NEH Programmes of ICAR-CIFA described the events of developmental activities undertaken by ICAR-CIFA for the livelihood improvement of the people of this region. Similarly, Dr S K Swain, Principal Scientist highlighted for Public Private Partnership approach to improve the livelihood through such integrated farming systems. During discussion in the meeting, Shri Ratneswar Rongpi, District Fisheries Development Officer of Karbi Anglong district suggested for utilising the pond dikes with growing of pigs for getting maximum return per unit area. Shri Jyotish Talukdar from Kalong Kapil, Bagibari expressed thankfulness to ICAR-CIFA for the interventions made by the scientists for the overall progress of the people of Assam and adjoining states.

Earlier, Dr C K Misra, Principal Scientist & co-cordinator of NEH Programmes of ICAR-CIFA welcomed all the participants to the meeting and briefed on the objectives of the event. During technical session, interactive discussion amongst scientist-extension-farmers were made where aquafarmers were provided with suitable management solutions for achieving better results from the pig-cum-fish farming system. The technical session also included distribution of inputs such as fish fingerlings, piglets, pig feed, fish feed and the visit of scientists to pig-cum-fish farming demonstration ponds with pig sty installed by ICAR-CIFA for the beneficiaries. During visit to each farmer pond, feeding management, health management and overall soil and water quality management was discussed on the farm sites.

The event was coordinated by Dr S Adhikari, Dr S K Swain and Dr C K Misra, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFA.
