Protecting Rights of the Marginalized during Covid

Bhubaneswar, 23/6/2021 ( Odisha Samachar )- On 19th of June 2021, the webinar was organized and hosted by CSNR on the theme “Protecting Rights of the Marginalized during Covid”. The webinar started at 2.30 PM, and continued till 5.00 PM. This was attended by around 100 students who are doing an internship on human right issues, and legal luminaries of the country such as senior advocate from Mumbai high court Mr. Mihir Desai and Mr. Asim Amitabh Das who presently is a distinguished member of Orissa Human Right Commission Mr. Mihir Desai was invited to join the webinar as chief speaker and Mr.Asim Amitabh Das to grace the occasion as guest speaker. The webinar intended to draw insight from the current situations, in the light of legal environment & constitutional arrangements. Rising vulnerabilities among the common people in general and marginalized in particular were discussed with indicative reference to infringement of people’s rights and entitlements during Covid.

Mr. Mihir Desai while recollecting his past experience in the legal profession stated that rapid change in the societal landscape has led to unprecedented expansion in human rights issues and varying cases of human right violation which are even difficult to comprehend. He also mentioned that changing political environment has blurred the distinction between fundamental right and directive principles. He reiterated that the pandemic is going to have a multiplier effect, and has the potential to affect human life beyond health and livelihood. He apprised the interns to remain open and acceptable to such complexities arising in their area of study.

Mr. Asim Amitabh Das stressed the role of legal professionals and in the current context and how they can become instrumental in strengthening human right institutions in the country. Pandemic has considerably weakened the state responses system to fight injustice ensure civil liberties for the common man. It has also empowered the power holders to commit atrocities. Young professionals should dedicate themselves as champions of human rights and help the state to fulfill its obligation both in short and long run. Due to an emergency-like situation in the country, rights have been curtailed. It becomes responsibility of legal professionals to reinstate rights by ensuring social justice for the poor and vulnerable.  He also praised the judgment of Delhi High Court which helped resolve the case of oxygen shortage in Delhi during the 2nd wave of covid. Webinar concluded at 5 PM, with a vote of thanks by CSNR.
