Bhubaneswar- 18/03/2026(Odisha Samachar / Rajat Mohapatra)-In continuation to the regional level conference on organisation and delivery of services in ICU, CCUs and HDUs held in month of October- 2025, a state level conference was held here in IMA conference hall today.
In the introductorysession, Secretary Health and Family welfare Aswathy S held one to one discussion with senior experts and doctors regarding standardised procedure for operation of ICU, CCU and HDUs in all Private and Govt sector hospitals of the State. She urged upon the experts to put in their best suggestions for effectivedelivery of intensive care servicesin the perspective of national and international standards. She also directed to ensure appropriate recording of the deliberations and timebound transmission of the outcomes to the Govt of India by 23rd March, 2026.
Prof Dr NibeditaPani of PGMIER, Bhubaneswar presented the draft guidelines for organization and delivery of intensive care services for further deliberation as per the directions of Hon’ble Supreme Court of India. Around 70 expert delegates from all reputed hospitals and medical colleges, district and subdivisional level hospitals of Odisha cutting across Govt and corporate sector participated in the deliberations. Among others, senior experts and professors from AIIMs, Bhubaneswar, SCBCuttack, AHRCC Cuttack, PGIMER and Capital hospitalBhubaneswar, KIMS, SUM IMS, Hitech Medical college, SLN medical College hospital Koraput, BB Medical College, Bolangirput forth their considered views.
As per the draft guidelines, different levels of ICUs (like Level-1, Level-2 Level-3) were described basing on severity of illness to be catered to. Level-1 ICUs generally caters to patients with not more than single organ dysfunction requiring short term stabilization and basic monitoring; while level-3 ICUs cater to critically ill patients requiring comprehensive multi-organ support, advanced invasive monitoring and complex critical care therapies.
Mainly, topics like admission policy to different levels of intensive care units, infrastructure in ICUs, equipment and furniture, number technically trained personnel, doctors, services inside the ICUs, imaging services, laboratory services, infection control, safety measures, nursing station and staff, counselling and communication with family members of the patient, discharge policy from intensive care units, dignified care at the end-of-life point etc were deliberated in the conference.
Director Medical Education and Training (DMET) Dr Santosh Mishra, Director Health Services Dr Pradeep Guru moderated the deliberations. Additional Director DMET Dr UmakantaSatpathy while outlining objectives of the conference lighted upon observations of Hon’ble Supreme Court in the matter.Joint DMET Dr RomaRatan gave welcome address in this one-day conference.
