From Dignity to Destiny: PMAY (Urban) Empowers the Life of a Garima Worker in Odisha

Bhubaneswar | Odisha,15/2/2026 ( Odisha Samachar / Rajat Mohapatra )- “For my family, having a permanent home was once just a dream… today, that dream has become reality.”

Rajendra Patra of Bhawanipatna in Kalahandi district is not just a Garima sanitation worker — he is a symbol of resilience, dignity and unwavering dedication. While he works tirelessly to keep his city clean, he also carries the profound responsibility of caring for his wife, who is battling paralysis.

For his family, a secure and permanent shelter was not merely an aspiration — it was a necessity.

Under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), that necessity found fulfilment. The pucca house sanctioned to his family has brought safety, stability and renewed hope. For his wife, it ensures comfort and protection during her medical condition. For his children, it provides a foundation for a secure future. For Rajendra, it restores dignity.

In a moment of immense pride, Rajendra was invited by the Hon’ble President of India to attend a special dinner at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Republic Day — a rare honour that recognised his dedication and service. From serving on the streets with commitment to being hosted at the nation’s highest constitutional residence, his journey reflects the true spirit of respect for labour and service.

Facilitated by the State Government, Rajendra also experienced his first flight to Delhi — an emotional milestone he described as “like a dream.”

His story sends a powerful message — service has no caste, and dedication has no boundaries.

The Government remains committed to ensuring that every eligible Garima beneficiary receives the benefits of PMAY (Urban) and other welfare initiatives. This is not merely about housing — it is about dignity, inclusion and recognising the silent heroes who serve society every day.

Rajendra Patra’s journey stands as a testament to how compassionate governance uplifts lives and turns dignity into destiny.
