Observance of World Wetlands Day

SAMBALPUR, February 2, 2026(Odisha Samachar): Wetlands are like the “kidneys of the earth” because they clean our water and protect us from floods. Today, these important water bodies are disappearing due to pollution and construction. To save our environment, it is very important that young people understand why we need to protect them.

To mark World Wetlands Day, the Hirakud Wildlife Division and Story4Change (NGO) organized a special program at Sambalpur Zoo. The event was supported by Ansu Pragyan Das (DFO, Hirakud Wildlife Division). Around 45 students from 6 different colleges in Sambalpur took part in the event.

The session was facilitated by Sachidananda Mishra, the founder of Story4Change. During the program, Binay Prakash Burh, the Ranger of Sambalpur Zoo, talked to the students about why wetlands are important for animals and humans. The students also watched a short film about the current situation of our water bodies.

After the film, there was an open discussion where students shared their ideas on how to save these areas. By the end of the session, all the students promised to work hard to protect and conserve wetlands in their respective area.
