SNEH Organizes Seminar on Restorative Justice

Bhubaneswar, 27/3/2022 ( Odisha Samachar )- Society for Nature, Education and Health (SNEH) organized a one-day seminar on Restorative Justice on March 27, at SAMPRITI-the organization’s training-cum-resource center in Bhubaneswar. Participating in this seminar, Director General of Prisons & Director Correctional Services  Mr Santosh Upadhyaya, IPS, former Additional Chief Secretary, Dr Aurobinda Behera, IAS and former District Judge Mr Umacharan Mishra, said that the current system of justice in the country is in the form of retributive or punitive with provision of punishing the guilty for crimes. The state is responsible for penalizing the criminal, where as the victim’s needs are ignored. The restorative system of justice delivery in our country is limited to the compensation to the victims in the form of financial assistance in a few cases. Dr Behera stressed on the need for restorative justice to reintegrate the offender with the community as well as restoration of normalcy in the relationship with the victim. At the outset, organization’s Advisor, Mr Subas Chandra Panda, made a comparative presentation on various aspects of the Punitive and the Restorative Justice practices. He explained how the restorative justice is a comprehensive system of justice delivery which meets the needs of all the stakeholders like, the victim, offender and the community and helps in restoring the broken relationships and healing the harm caused by the crime.

The seminar was attended by 25 civil society members comprising social workers, police officers, members of judiciary and educationists.

SNEH’s President Ms Subarna Ghosh presided over the seminar and delivered the welcome address. This program was supported by Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), Kolkata.
