Bhubaneswar, 15/2/2022 ( Odisha Samachar )- Society for Nature, Education and Health (SNEH) organized a one-day workshop onRestorative Justice on February 15, at SAMPRITI-the organization’s training-cum-resourcecenter in Bhubaneswar. Inaugurating the program Dr Bhagaban Prakash, eminent scholar andcolumnist, said that the current system of justice in the country is in the form of retributive orpunitive with provision of punishing the guilty for crimes. The state is responsible for penalizing the criminal, where as the victim’s needs are ignored. The restorative system of justice delivery in our country is limited to the compensation to the victims in the form of financial assistance. Dr Prakash stressed on the need for restorative justice to reintegrate the offender with the community as well as restoration of normalcy in the relationship with the victim. He also referred to the traditional practice of conflict resolution among the indigenous tribes and rural societies which followed the system of restorative Justice. The workshop was attended by 25 civil society members comprising social workers, police officers, members of judiciary and educationists. Mr Subas Panda, Advisor, SNEH, facilitated the workshop. SNEH’s project coordinator Mr Prasanta Kumar Pradhan and project assistant Mr Dibakar Mahali participated as co-facilitators. SNEH’s President Ms Subarna Ghosh presided over the inaugural session and delivered the welcome address. This workshop was supported by Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), Kolkata.
