7 members of Cyber Gang arrested, more than thousand pre activated SIM seized

Bhubaneswar, 29/6/2021 ( Odisha Samachar / Debasis Rath)- In course of investigation of Saheed Nagar P.S Case No 21/2021, Dt 11/1/2021, U/S 419/420 IPC/66(C)/66(D) I.T Act by Cyber cell, BBSR UPD, Commissionerate Police under direct supervision of Dr U.S.Das, IPS, DCP, BBSR UPD cyber cell officers unearthed  an organized gang  operating in Odisha who are activating multiple SIMs of different Mobile Service Providers in the name of different customers arranging forged documents without the knowledge of the genuine customers and sending those out of Odisha to fraudsters, criminals, gang members who are indulge in Cyber related crime. Particularly those gang is active in Bhadrak side. A series of Cyber fraud case has been registered at almost every police station of Odisha and people lost their money being cheated by cyber fraudsters by using this type of fake SIMs. On further enquiry and timely action of Cyber Cell Seven members were arrested and thousands of pre activated SIMs and hundreds of mobile handsets have been seized. It gave an eye opening message regarding the activity of Cyber criminals in Odisha. 

During investigation, it came to light that, a well organized racket including  OTP sellers and employees, distributors, agents of  different mobile service providers along with others conjointly  in an organized manner for illegal gain, making forged and tampered documents and photos of genuine customers, illegally prepared  pre-activated SIMs by impersonating lakhs of innocent customers and sold those SIMs. They have also sold those SIMs outside Odisha having no definite address and identity of the customers which is impossible to trace the accused persons after commission of any crime by using those fake SIMs. More than Two lakhs of fake SIMs they have already sold and converted through MNP. Different fraudsters, criminals, organized gangs used those SIMs and cheated lakhs of innocent public through cyber crime. General public lost crores of their hard earn money to fraudsters. There is every possibility that those unidentified customers pre-activated SIM is dangerous to state and national security. If it goes in the hand of terrorists, Maoists, anti-Nationals, kidnappers, extortionists and inter-state criminals it may lead to subversive activity. The life and property of common citizens, VIPs, VVIPs, eminent personalities, celebrities, political leaders and social activists will be in danger due to use of such illegally pre activated SIMs in the name of unidentified customers and used by criminals. After commission of crime investigating agency may not reach the criminals involved in any heinous crime. Their act will pose serious threat to the National security and those SIMs can be used as a free weapon by criminals to commit crime.

  3. SubratKumar Panigrahi (24), S/O ShyamsundarPanigrahi, At –Mauda, Po –Adalapanka, P.S – Soso, Dist. Keonjhar.
  4. Sukant Kumar Das (30), S/o-Giridhari Das, At/Po- Nasirpur, P.O- Sadanga, P.S- Nandipada, Dist-Kendujhar.
  5. SrinibashGhadai (21), S/O GolakhaChGhadai, At – Alauti, P.S – Bhadrak Rural, Dist. Bhadrak.
  6. Rajesh Ku Sethi (29), S/O TrilochanaSethi, At – Bhagapur, Po –Aruha, P.S – Basudevpur, Dist. Bhadrak.
  7. Mangalamaya Mishra (27), S/o- Damodara Mishra, At/Po- Chalunigaon, Betada, P.S- Simulia, Dist – Balasore.

Articles Seized :-

  1. 16147 (Sixteen Thousand One hundred Fourty Seven) illegally pre-activated, used SIMs of Voda Fone – Idea, BSNL, Air Tel, JIO.
  2. 110 numbers of handsets including Key Pad and Android Smart phones in working condition.
  3. Demo mobiles and demo SIMs used for SIM activation.
