Bhubaneswar, 22/8/2025 ( Odisha Samachar ): On the evening of August 22, tenpromising young Odissi dancers eagerly waited to take the stage at 7 pm,and showcase their immense potential and talent in front of stalwart Gurus and well-wishers at the 11th edition of the ‘Under Sixteen’ programme, organised by the Odissi Dancers Council (ODC) at Bhanja Kala Mandap, Bhubaneswar. Since most dance festivals offer solo platforms to artistes only over the age of 16, ‘Under Sixteen’ was instituted with the aim of providing an exclusive platform for youngsters under 16 years to discover their passion for the Odissi dance, encourage them as future performers, and inculcate in them the spirit of professionalism and dedication to the Art and culture.
The programme for the evening was inaugurated by esteemed guestsGuru Sachidananda Das, Eminent Mardala Player; Dr.SnehapravaSamantaray, President, ODC; Dr. Ileana Citaristi, Secretary, ODC; andGuruRatikantMohapatra, Executive Member, ODC. After the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, the much-awaited performances for the evening commenced.
The first presentation of the evening was Shiva Tandav which was set to Raga Bhatiyar and TaalKhemta which was performed by Ms. Abhijita Panda, a disciple of Guru Dushmanta Kumar Swain and whose dance choreographed by Padma Vibhushan Guru KelucharanMohapatra and music composed by Pandit Bhubaneswar Mishra. This was followed by Ms. Jivika Kumari under the supervision of Guru Jyoti Rout performing Bandha Natowhich was set to Raga Megh and TaalEktaaliand dance choreographed by Guru Jyoti Rout and music composed by Guru Sachidananda Das.
Later, Sai Prasad Panda, a disciple of Guru RatkantMohapatra, performed AbhinayDekha go in a traditional Champu composition which was set to Raga Mishrapillu and TaalKhemta and dance choreographed by Guru RatikantMohapatra. The next production was Sate Ki Bhangi Kala performed by Guru DebashisPatnaik’s disciple Sushri Anaya Pati which was based on Raga Tilak Kamod and Taal Jati and whose dance choreographed by Guru Durga Charan Ranbir and music was composed by Guru Dhaneshwar Swain.
This was followed by another dance piece, Basant Pallavi, a combination of dance and music, based on Raga Basant and Ekatali, performed by SushriAarohi Panda of Pradikshina Institute, run and supervised by the talented dance consultant of Ansuman Mishra. The music of the production was composed by SangeetSudhakarBalakrushna Das and the dance choreographed by Guru KelucharanMahapatra. After this, Sushri Adrita Majumdar, a disciple of Piyali Ghosh, presented Bhangi Chahan which was based on the dance structure of Guru KelucharanMahapatra and music was composed by Pandit Bhubaneswar Mishra.
The next presentation was Mohan Murati Chai performed by Sur Mandir Institute dancer and disciple of Guru Dr. Jyotsna Rani Sahu, which was based on Raga Bhouravi and TaalKhemta, choreographed by Guru Dr. Jyotsna Rani Sahu and music composed by Guru SwapneswarChakravarty. Later, Guru SwayampragnyaSahu’s disciple Ms. Asmin Jena presented Kalavati Pallavi, which was based on Raga Kalavati and TaalEktaali, choreographed by Guru Deva Prasad Das and music composed by Guru Bankim Chandra Sethi.
The next performance was the Odia performance Na JaaJamunare Radha presented by Guru HarekrushnaDhal’s disciple Ms.MiloneeMohanty. The choreography of this dance was made by Guru Bichitrananda Swain and music composed by Guru Bijay Kumar Barik. The finale presentation of the evening was Dashavatar by PinkiDebbarma’s disciple, Ms. BrsitiMajumdar, which was set to the tune of Raag Kalyan and TaalAardaJhampa. This timeless presentation was composed in dance and music by the legendary duo Guru KelucharanMohapatra and Pandit Bhubaneswar Mishra. The programme of the evening wascompered smoothly by ShriBiswajitBaliarsingh.
