Jagatsinghpur 27/9/2024 ( Odisha Samachar) : The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Jagatsinghpur organized a five-day training programme on scientific beekeeping at the KVK premises. The camp was inaugurated by the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Mr. Kahnu Charan Sethy, the representative of the MP. The event was coordinated by Mr. Debasis Panda, Crop Protection Scientist of KVK. Thirty leading farmers from different blocks of the district participated in the training camp.
During the program, the participants were trained on various topics such as types of honeybees, different classes of bees within the colony, the life cycle of honeybees, selection of honeybee hive location, placement of beehives, the right time to start beekeeping, required equipment, selection of optimal honeybee colonies for beekeeping, essential qualities of bee colonies, transport and management of colonies, hive inspection, seasonal management of bee colonies, alternative food, protection from the effects of pesticides, management of bee enemies and diseases, and honey extraction.
On the second day of the program, the farmers were taken to the village Haladia Math to learn about the method of colony capturing. Senior beekeepers, Mr. Krushna Chandra Dalei and Mr. Nikuja Panda, were honored during the event.
Several master trainers, including Mr. Nitai Charan Dalei, Mr. Ashok Kumar Sadangi, Mr. Ranjan Kumar Mahapatra, Mr. Pramod Kumar Biswal, Mr. Deepak Kumar Muduli, and Mr. Adhir Kumar Panda, shared their expertise on beekeeping. Additionally, Dr. Bikash Patra and Dr. Prabhasini Behera provided insights through online sessions on seasonal colony management and protection of honeybees from diseases and pests.
The program was concluded with Dr. Jibanjit Sen, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK, presenting certificates to the participants. Farmers who have maintained more than 20 beehives, such as Mr. Chittaranjan Gachhayat, Mr. Subendu Bhol, Mr. Suresh Mallik, and Mr. Manoranjan Raut, were honored. All scientists from KVK, including Dr. Pradipta Majhi, Dr. Dwarika Mohan Das, Mrs. Sasmita Purohit, Mrs. Sarita Das, and technical staff like Ms. Bijayini Sahu and Dr. Bichhinna Maitree Raut, contributed to the success of the program.
