NLUO inaugurats  its MBA Programme in Healthcare Management and Law

Cuttack, 6/2/2026 ( Odisha Samachar )-National Law University Odisha (NLUO) formally inaugurated its MBA Programme in Healthcare Management and Law today, marking a significant step towards strengthening interdisciplinary education by integrating legal education with healthcare management principles, enabling students to lead in this dynamic sector. The programme is designed to create a cadre of human resources who play and wish to play a leadership role in healthcare and organisations, and those engaged in promoting health and wellbeing at local, national and international levels.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by Shri Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, as the Chief Guest, along with Prof. Ved Kumari, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, NLUO, senior faculty members, healthcare professionals and policymakers.

The Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister emphasised in his remarks that healthcare must now be seen as a fundamental public duty rather than a peripheral welfare role. He emphasised Odisha Government’s consistent investment in the health sector, which includes significant budgetary allocation, increased insurance coverage under the Gopabandhu Jana Arogya Yojana integrated with Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY, improved hospital infrastructure, and a strong emphasis on primary and preventive care.

He emphasised that good management, strong legal frameworks, ethical governance, and clear regulations are becoming increasingly cardinal for the efficient delivery of healthcare systems as they expand in size and complexity. He pointed out that the recently introduced MBA program is pertinent and timely in this regard since it trains professionals who can fill in the gaps between administration, law, healthcare delivery, and policy implementation.

The Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister congratulated the University for conceptualising a programme that responds directly to contemporary governance and healthcare challenges and expressed confidence that its graduates would contribute meaningfully to strengthening healthcare systems in Odisha and across the country.

Earlier, Prof. (Dr.) Arjyalopa Mishra, Associate Professor and Programme Director, outlined the academic vision behind the MBA Programme. She noted that the programme represents a deliberate move by NLUO to advance interdisciplinary education by integrating management studies with legal and regulatory perspectives in healthcare.

Dr. Mishra’s foregrounded the importance of this course in the complex compliance regimes, data governance frameworks, and policy environments within which modern healthcare institutions  operate, which necessitates trained professionals who possess a blend of managerial, legal, and sectoral expertise. Through a curriculum that integrates strategic management, healthcare law, governance, ethics, and hands-on field experience, the program aims to develop such multi-competency professionals.

She further highlighted that the program is supported by an expert advisory committee made up of academics and practitioners from prestigious institutions and includes structured internships and engagement with healthcare institutions to ensure real-world relevance.

The programme also witnessed an address by the Guest of Honour, Prof. (Dr.) Lucy Das, Principal and Dean, SCB Medical College, Cuttack, who reflected on the increasing need of ethically guided and legally informed healthcare professionals. This was followed by a keynote address by Dr. Sunil Chandy, Former Director, Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, who underscored the importance of professional management and accountability in health systems. The inaugural session concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Rangin Pallav Tripathy, Registrar, NLUO, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, speakers, faculty members, and participants for their presence and support in making the programme launch a success.

The inauguration programme included a video and brochure launch of the MBA programme. The event concluded with panel discussions on the themes of Law and Hospitals and Law and Health, bringing together experts from law, medicine, hospital administration, and public policy.

With the launch of this programme, NLUO continues to expand its role as a centre for policy-oriented, socially responsive, and interdisciplinary higher education, aligned with national and state priorities in healthcare and governance.
