St. George’s University Urges Early Screening to Prevent Prostate Cancer in Men’s Health Awareness Month

Global Cancer Observatory, prostate cancer is the fourth common cancer with a total of 16,374 new cases. To mark Men’s Health Awareness Month, St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, highlights essential steps that South Korean men should be aware of to prevent prostate cancer and maintain good health.

Get Checked Early

South Korean men aged over 40, especially those who have family members treated for prostate cancer, should get checked early by a doctor to have the best chance for successful treatment if detected.

The
Zero Prostate Cancer Organization recommends that men aged 45 and older (or 40 if at higher risk) consult with medical professionals about prostate cancer tests, including Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and Digital Rectal Exam (DRE), to develop an optimal treatment plan.

Understand Screening Options

Various tests can be implemented to diagnose prostate cancer. Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) can be used to test PSA levels in blood. These tests can indicate early prostate cancer signs and non-cancer conditions, such as a urinary infection or benign enlarged prostate. Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) is another option, offering a quick clinical check for prostate abnormalities.

Early detection through regular health checkups is paramount. For common men’s diseases like prostate cancer, timely diagnosis dramatically increases the chances of a better, easier life. By prioritizing preventative care and engaging in open conversations with their doctors about their health history, men can take proactive steps to safeguard their well-being and improve their long-term health outcomes.

Regular exercise, such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming, can help reduce the risk of advanced prostate cancer. Men should exercise for at least 30 minutes a day to stay fit, maintain a healthy weight and help regulate their hormone levels.

National Cancer Information Center highlights that abstinence from tobacco and alcohol and a healthy diet rich in Lycopene and Sulforaphane can significantly reduce long-term prostate cancer risk. Vegetables, especially tomatoes, fruits, soybeans, and fish, are highly recommended for preventing prostate cancer.
