Gatha Odisha Ra: Bande Utkal Janani” Mesmerizes Audience at Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Cultural Evening

Bhubaneswar, 8/1/2025 ( Odisha Samachar / Rajat Mohapatra)-: The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations commenced in Bhubaneswar, illuminating the temple city in a spectacular display of lights and cultural fervor. As part of the evening’s festivities, the open-air stage witnessed the enchanting performance of the dance drama “Gatha Odisha Ra : Bande Utkal Janani.” This cultural extravaganza, based on Odisha’s rich heritage, captivated the audience with its artistry and grandeur.

The event was inaugurated by Odisha’s Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi and Union Minister for External Affairs Shri S. Jaishankar, who lit the ceremonial lamp to mark the beginning of the cultural evening.

A Tribute to Odisha’s Glory the dance drama “Gatha Odisha Ra” showcased the essence of Odia art, literature, tradition and history. From ancient times to modern history, including the Kalinga War, the Paika Rebellion and Odisha’s journey to statehood, the performance vividly portrayed the state’s glorious past. Artists brought to life the Jagannath culture, Odia literature and festivals through intricate movements, leaving the audience spellbound.

The program also highlighted modern Odisha’s achievements in crafts, architecture and handlooms, along with themes of women’s empowerment and their role in building the state. Promoting the message of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, the performance featured over 350 artists, who seamlessly integrated classical and folk dance forms.

Praise from Dignitaries Union Minister Shri S. Jaishankar described “Gatha Odisha Ra” as a spectacular representation of Odisha’s culture, heritage and traditions. The evening was graced by notable dignitaries, including Odisha’s Culture Minister Shri Suryavanshi Suraj, Revenue Minister Shri Suresh Pujari, School and Mass Education Minister Shri Nityananda Gond, Rural Development Minister Shri Rabi Narayan Naik and Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Shri Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia. Members of Parliament Smt. Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo (Balangir) and Smt. Malavika Devi (Kalahandi) and Chief Secretary Shri Manoj Ahuja, were also present in the event.

The dance drama incorporated eight classical dance forms and various folk dances of Odisha, choreographed by renowned Guru Dr. Aruna Mohanty. The breathtaking choreography and innovative storytelling paid homage to Odisha’s illustrious legacy, earning widespread acclaim from the audience.
