JAMSHEDPUR ,27/4/2022 : Prime Minister Boris today officially inaugurated JCB’s newest factory in India and with this, the company strengthened its manufacturing presence across the globe. JCB has 11 factories in the UK, employing over 7500 people. The company started manufacturing in India in the year 1979 and is now a leading manufacturer of construction equipment in the country.
Today Mr. Johnson visited JCB’s newest factory in India, a 100 million Euro investment plant in Gujarat that will fabricate parts for global production chains. The new factory is located in Vadodara, near the coastal city of Surat, on the west coast of India.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by Lord Bamford, Chairman of JCB, who led the expansion of JCB in India in the late 1970s. This includes the launch of the company’s first factory in Vallabhgarh near Delhi. Today JCB has six factories in India at various locations including Jaipur and Pune.
Talking about this, Lord Bamford said, “In its first year of full production, JCB India made only 39 machines and next year the number of machines will be half a million. This country is now a big power in terms of engineering and our business has changed after coming here. We have had great success and there is still great potential for growth. This progress has been made possible only by continued investments and the launch of our new facility in Gujarat is a significant step towards the growth of our business in India and around the world.”
Deepak Shetty, CEO and MD, JCB India, said, “This new facility will create around 1200 jobs directly after completion and thousands of jobs will be created in the supply chain as well. It will also become the industry benchmark in terms of gender diversity and adopt modern technologies in laser cutting, welding and machining. Vadodara is a strategic location for JCBs due to its close proximity to the beaches, where there is also availability of raw material and skilled talent. We thank the Government of Gujarat for their unprecedented support for this project.”
India has been the largest market for JCBs since 2007 and today one out of every two construction machines sold in India is made by JCB. The new facility is spread over an area of 47 acres and will be capable of processing 85,000 tonnes of steel on an annual basis.
The new plant will be a gender-diverse manufacturing facility, with 50% of the workforce being women. JCB India has also set up Skill Centers (Skill Centres) at this plant, where young professionals will be trained to work in various manufacturing roles.
