TRAINING ON NUTRIGARDENS FOR FOOD AND NUTRITIONAL SECURITY

Bhubaneswar, 30/7/2021 ( Odisha Samachar)-The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Khordha, ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA), Bhubaneswarin collaboration with Darbar Sahitya Sansad (DSS), Khordha has organized a one day training programme on“Nutrigardens for food and nutritional security” on 29.07.2021 for the farmwomen at Padmapur village, Balipatna Block of Khordha District. In inaugurating session Dr. S.S. Giri, Principal Scientist & Head (I/C), KVK, Khordha highlighted the importance of consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables in the daily diet for healthy and wealthy life. Shri Kedareswar Choudhury, Secretary, DSS, Khordha encouraged the trainees to grow vegetables and fruits organically in their kitchen garden for maintenance of good health. Earlier, Dr. Harapriya Nayak, Subject Matter Specialist (Home Science) and Course Director of the training programme welcomed the delegates and briefed about the aim and objectives of the training programme.She explained the nutritional importance of vegetables and fruits and its health benefits.

The trainees were imparted knowledge about the cultivation practices of suitable horticultural crops in Nutrigarden, weed management, disease and pest management and use of bio-pesticides in the vegetable and fruit crops grown in the Nutrigarden. Practical demonstration on bed preparation, application of manure and fertilizer, seed sowing, irrigation etc. was carried out by Mrs. Sukanti Behera, ACTO.Dr. B.K.Banja, CTO (Animal Science) and Shri P.R.Sahoo,Subject Matter Specialist (Fishery science) of KVK, Khordha participated in the training programme.Vegetable seeds, fruit plants such as papaya, lemon and drumstick plants were distributed to the trainees. A total of 50 farmwomen belonging to Schedule Caste category from five Self Help Groups (SHGs)from Padmapur village of Balipatna Block of Khordha Districtbenefitted from the training programme.Dr. Harapriya Nayak Mrs. Sukanti Behera ACTO (Home Science planned and coordinated the program.
