The Awards find, fund and<br \/>\nsupport technology solutions that save lives before, during or after natural<br \/>\ndisaster events.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2000, more than 40 per cent of global disaster events have taken<br \/>\nplace in the Asia Pacific region<a name=\"_ftnref2\" title=\"\">[2]<\/a>,<br \/>\nresulting in around 800,000 deaths and affecting 3.2 billion people<a name=\"_ftnref3\" title=\"\">[3]<\/a>. This year,<br \/>\nthe COVID-19 pandemic which has infected more than 11 million people<a name=\"_ftnref4\" title=\"\">[4]<\/a> and<br \/>\nexpected to result in over US$2.7 trillion in economic losses<a name=\"_ftnref5\" title=\"\">[5]<\/a>, has<br \/>\nmagnified the importance of disaster preparedness and collaboration across all<br \/>\nsectors in reducing the threat and impact of natural disaster events.<\/p>\n<p>The SAFE STEPS D-Tech Awards was created<br \/>\nby Prudence Foundation out of the belief that technology innovation can play a more<br \/>\nsignificant role in improving disaster preparedness, recovery and resilience. The<br \/>\nAwards are part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.safesteps.com\/\">SAFE STEPS<\/a>, a multi-platform, mass<br \/>\nawareness programme developed by Prudence Foundation and supported by the IFRC<br \/>\nand other partners to provide life-saving information around natural disaster<br \/>\nevents, road safety and first aid.<\/p>\n<p>Organisations participating in<br \/>\nthe Awards will stand a chance to win grants from a pool of US$200,000 to<br \/>\nsupport the implementation and scaling of their D-Tech solutions. Semi-finalists<br \/>\nand finalists will have access to expert coaching, pitching and networking<br \/>\nopportunities with humanitarian representatives, venture capital fund managers,<br \/>\nfellow tech entrepreneurs and social enterprise developers. Finalists will pitch<br \/>\ntheir solutions to a panel of judges in June 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Donald Kanak, Chairman of<br \/>\nPrudence Foundation, said, &#8220;The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has raised the awareness<br \/>\nof the critical need for disaster preparedness and the power of technology in<br \/>\nresilience, response and recovery. We established the SAFE STEPS D-Tech Awards<br \/>\nto encourage entrepreneurs across the world to direct their energy and<br \/>\ningenuity in applying their technology to reduce the devastating impact of disasters.<br \/>\nWe believe D-Tech has huge potential to be a disruptive game changer for good<br \/>\nand be just as impactful as technology has been in other areas, such as edtech,<br \/>\nfintech and medtech.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Alexander<br \/>\nMatheou, IFRC&#8217;s Regional Director for Asia Pacific, said, &#8220;2020 has shown us that resilience<br \/>\nagainst disasters has never been more important. Lenovo aims to combine the power of<br \/>\nworld-class technology solutions with the creativity and know-how of local<br \/>\nentrepreneurs and charitable organisations, to achieve better preparedness,<br \/>\nrecovery, and resilience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Awards are supported by a<br \/>\nwide range of strategic partners, including the Asian Venture Philanthropy<br \/>\nNetwork (AVPN), Antler, e27, Give2Asia, Hatcher+, Jubilee Capital Management and<br \/>\nNational Geographic.<\/p>\n<p>The competition is open for entries from today to 19 February 2021.
