Tanoto Foundation is an independent<i><br \/>\n<\/i>philanthropic organisation founded<br \/>\nby Mr. and Mrs. Sukanto Tanoto.<\/p>\n<p>Hendra<br \/>\nBudiono explains that reinforcing reading<br \/>\ntogether as a teaching method to enhance the students&#8217; reading proficiency has<br \/>\nbeen quite a challenge for early grade teachers during the pandemic. Teachers and students are not possible to read a big book<br \/>\ntogether in class as they usually do.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A solution for this<br \/>\nproblem that will enable the teachers to teach reading to early grade students<br \/>\nin the current pandemic situation is the use of the digital big book. Digital <i>B<\/i><i>ig Book<\/i>, apart from presenting captivating pictures, also deliver<br \/>\nstories through the teacher&#8217;s voice, replacing face-to-face communication. Of<br \/>\ncourse, this will motivate the students to listen to the story as it will treat<br \/>\ntheir longing for classroom interactions with their teachers. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A training programme is held for early grade elementary school teachers (group<br \/>\nlearning) to achieve this goal. The prerequisite to joining this programme is that the participants must be able to operate the<br \/>\nPowerpoint (PPT) application. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The training includes<br \/>\nactivities as follows:<\/p>\n<p><b>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Analy<\/b><b>s<\/b><b>ing basic competence<\/b><b\/><\/p>\n<p>The first step in creating a digital<br \/>\nbig book is analysing the basic competence embodied in the big book. The<br \/>\npurpose of this analysis is to make sure that the story&#8217;s content is in<br \/>\naccordance with the demands of competence set in the national curriculum so<br \/>\nthat learning objectives can be achieved.<\/p>\n<p><b>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Select an Interesting<br \/>\ntheme for the story<\/b><b\/><\/p>\n<p>After deciding the basic competence<br \/>\nincluded in the big book, the next step is to select an exciting theme for the<br \/>\nstory. In doing so, participants should also consider the grade level being<br \/>\ntaught.<\/p>\n<p><b>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Writing story outline<\/b><b\/><\/p>\n<p>After selecting a solid topic, the<br \/>\nparticipants will be asked to write a story outline and prepare a drawing plan<br \/>\nfor each big book page. At this stage, participants can write and draw the<br \/>\nconcepts on paper before applying them in the PowerPoint application.<\/p>\n<p><b>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Using computer\/laptop as<br \/>\na medium for writing a big digital book.<\/b><b\/><\/p>\n<p>At this stage, participants are<br \/>\nrequired to use a personal computer or laptop connected to the internet.<br \/>\nParticipants can do simple research online before writing the big book,<br \/>\nsearching relevant images that enrich the story. They can also search images<br \/>\nonline during the big bookmaking process. The next step is using PowerPoint<br \/>\n(PPT) as a design template to insert images and story text.<\/p>\n<p><b>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Writing the text and<br \/>\ninserting images using PowerPoint (PPT)<\/b><b\/><\/p>\n<p>Participants can start inserting the<br \/>\ndownloaded images and then save them and paste them into the template design<br \/>\nthat we have prepared. The next step is to write the story&#8217;s text at the bottom<br \/>\nor side of each image. Do these steps until the digital <i>Big <\/i><i>Book<\/i> is completed according to the outline.<\/p>\n<p><b>6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Adding audio into PPT<\/b><b\/><\/p>\n<p>The participant&#8217;s\/teacher&#8217;s voice is<br \/>\nadded into PPT according to the text of the story made. Before recording the<br \/>\nvoice, make sure that the condition is silent enough so that the voice can be<br \/>\nheard clearly. <\/p>\n<p>In the PPT application, select<br \/>\ninsert, Audio, Record audio. Then start recording by clicking the red button.<br \/>\nWhen it is done, click OK. Do these steps for all slides that have been made.<br \/>\nYou can check and listen to the recording first by clicking the dialogue box.<\/p>\n<p><b>7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Exporting PPT<br \/>\npresentation slides to Video<\/b><b\/><\/p>\n<p>The next step is to export the<br \/>\npresentation slides to video format. Click file, select export, select create a<br \/>\nvideo, select computer and HD player, and select don&#8217;t use recorded timings and<br \/>\nnarration. Lastly, select create a video by naming the file and choosing<br \/>\nstorage location. Wait until the video export process is complete.<\/p>\n<p><b>8.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Uploading the video to a<br \/>\nYouTube account<\/b><b\/><\/p>\n<p>To make it easier for students to<br \/>\naccess the videos and start learning from them, it is advisable to upload the<br \/>\nvideos to the YouTube page. The YouTube links can be shared with students<br \/>\nthrough their respective WhatsApp Group so that they can access the videos<br \/>\nanytime and anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The digital <i>Big <\/i><i>Book<\/i> is convenient to use. For example, to improve vocabulary<br \/>\nmastery, teachers can mention the words on the digital big book repeatedly or ask the students to mention the words<br \/>\nwritten on the digital big book. And to make it more casual, it should be done as if the<br \/>\nteacher is talking to the students directly in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the voice recording<br \/>\nprocess, teachers must be able to express themselves in accordance with the<br \/>\nstoryline of the digital big book, pay attention to punctuation and deliver clear intonation<br \/>\nso that students can listen to the stories and follow the instructions.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In order to improve the<br \/>\nreading skills, teachers can ask their students to retell the story in the big<br \/>\nbook with the same punctuation, intonation and expression. Teachers can ask their<br \/>\nstudents to make a video while reading the book and send it to the WhatsApp<br \/>\nGroups for evaluation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To help the students<br \/>\nunderstand the book&#8217;s contents, at the end of the story, the teacher can give<br \/>\nsome questions. And, of course, they can only be answered after the students<br \/>\ncompletely read the digital <i>Big B<\/i><i>ook<\/i> story from start to end.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Making the<br \/>\npowerpoint-based digital big book is quite interesting as it is proven to be a<br \/>\nsolution made by teachers in overcoming students&#8217; low interest and motivation<br \/>\nin reading. The digital <i>Big B<\/i><i>ook<\/i> makes it easier for students to learn reading.
