HANOI, VIETNAM – Media OutReach<\/a> – 19 January 2022 – The\u00a0VinFuture
\nPrize<\/a> has hugely inspired all the scientists involved and it will go a
\nsignificant way to\u00a0put
\nthe country on the world’s science map and honour those willing to go the extra mile to make
\nscientific breakthroughs – those with endless curiosity that think outside of
\nthe box.<\/p>\n

Talking
\nabout the journey to VinFuture, Professor Albert P. Pisano (California
\nUniversity, San Diego, USA), co-chairman of the VinFuture Pre-Screening
\nCommittee spoke about his first time hearing about VinFuture.\u00a0“The
\nfirst idea on my mind is that we rarely\u00a0see a prize that can acknowledge
\nsuch devotion from\u00a0scientists, since when the ideas were formed\u00a0until
\nthe realization is made, and\u00a0impacting millions of people, as
\nwith\u00a0VinFuture<\/i>,”\u00a0said Pisano\u00a0during VinFuture’s\u00a0talk
\nwith the public on the morning of January 18, 2022, at Almaz Convention Center,
\nHanoi.<\/p>\n

Professor Richard Henry Friend, chairman of VinFuture Prize Council, said\u00a0he
\nstill remembers the “excitement” when he heard\u00a0about VinFuture.<\/p>\n

Professor Nguyen Thuc Quyen, California University, Santa
\nBarbara (USA), co-chairwoman of VinFuture Pre-Screening Committee, said:\u00a0“To me, this is
\nnot simply a\u00a0prize\u00a0fund, it is the prize for\u00a0Vietnamese
\npeople.”<\/p>\n

Professor Quyen is persuaded by the fact that technology all
\nover the world has not changed the lives of poor farmers and labourers. Born in
\na small village in Vi\u1ec7t Nam where there was\u00a0no electricity for 16 years,
\nshe knows better than anyone else. Accordingly, she wants to contribute a
\nscientific idea that can reach the majority, especially the poor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Quyen could not\u00a0hide her happiness that there are almost
\n600 nominees for the prize.\u00a0“The mission of the prize has touched the
\nhearts of many. There are plenty of candidates coming from various continents,”
\nshe said.<\/p>\n

Professor Richard Friend confirmed that\u00a0the quality of entrants
\nwas marvellous, and beyond the standards\u00a0they were expecting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A much-awaited\u00a0part of the talk is the stories of popular
\nand learned\u00a0“judges” about how they made breakthroughs in technology.<\/p>\n

The journeys of the professors all came from\u00a0a simple
\nthing:\u00a0“curiosity.”<\/p>\n

Nguyen Thuc Quyen\u00a0loved\u00a0literature and history, but
\nonly when she\u00a0turned\u00a025\u00a0did she find her true calling, during a
\nscience lesson.<\/p>\n

Professor Albert P. Pisano accidentally met a
\nrelative\u00a0who made\u00a0glasses and cups from different materials, which
\nignited his curiosity and\u00a0first steps in\u00a0science.<\/p>\n

“The aim of science, after all, is curiosity,
\nexploration, and the journey to walk on,” said\u00a0Professor Nguyen Thuc
\nQuyen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Professor Dang Van Chi, Ludwig Cancer Research
\nInstitute,\u00a0told the story of his u-turn when he raised “a question that
\nnever been questioned.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

These questions can be doubted at first; some questions may be
\nwrong, but the important thing\u00a0is that “among many wrong questions, there
\nwill be a right question,” he said.<\/p>\n

Professor Quyen believes the\u00a0beauty of science originally
\ncomes from the act of stepping out of your\u00a0comfort zone, to be brave
\nenough to run and step into a\u00a0new zone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“If we don’t knock, no door will be opened. No one can stop us
\nfrom dreaming and reaching dreams high above,” she said.<\/p>\n

Professor Richard Friend thinks that we need the forum to
\nexplore together and create a\u00a0“can do” culture to inspire the
\nyoung.\u00a0“Talents need to be inspired, authorised, and we must never stop exploring,”\u00a0he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Professor Albert P. Pisano said that this prize was
\na precious lesson to everyone, so\u00a0scientists can show off their
\npotential,\u00a0express their love to\u00a0human beings, and be confident in
\nthe way they choose.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Professor Richard Henry Friend said: “We
\nmust\u00a0not\u00a0judge young people when they are walking on\u00a0different
\npaths\u00a0of their own. The crucial thing is that we need to build a culture
\nof respecting education and training, to encourage the students to walk freely
\nwith proper orientation. They can be outside regular standards, as long as they
\nare successful.”<\/p>\n

“This is the only event that has had such a positive impact on
\nVi\u1ec7t Nam and the whole world.”<\/p>\n
