The industry-first framework proposes five areas of environmental<br \/>\nimpact inclusive of key metrics for data center operators in various stages of<br \/>\ntheir sustainability journeys. By leveraging the framework, operators can mitigate<br \/>\nthe impact data centers have on the environment. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Data centers<br \/>\nare the backbone of today&#8217;s digital world. They are also responsible for up to<br \/>\ntwo percent of the world&#8217;s carbon emissions, equivalent to that of the airline<br \/>\nindustry. To contend with an increase in digital bandwidth and IT-sector<br \/>\nelectricity demand, the industry demands a holistic and standardized approach<br \/>\nto environmental sustainability. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pankaj Sharma, Executive<br \/>\nVice President, Secure Power Division, Schneider Electric, said: &#8220;Environmental<br \/>\nsustainability reporting is a growing focus for many data center operators.<br \/>\nYet, the industry lacks a standardized approach for implementing, measuring,<br \/>\nand reporting on environmental impact. Schneider Electric developed a holistic<br \/>\nframework with standardized metrics to guide operators and the industry at<br \/>\nlarge. Our intention with this framework is to improve benchmarking and<br \/>\nprogress toward environmental sustainability to protect natural resources for<br \/>\nfuture generations. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The data center<br \/>\nindustry has made significant progress in increasing energy efficiency;<br \/>\nhowever, as digital demands increase they must remain committed to driving<br \/>\nlong-term broader sustainability initiatives,&#8221; said Rob Brothers, Program Vice<br \/>\nPresident for the Datacenter and Support Services Program at IDC. You can&#8217;t<br \/>\nhave an impact on what you don&#8217;t measure; therefore, companies must establish<br \/>\nclear and consistent metrics that account for not only efficient technology,<br \/>\nbut also the consumption (or possible destruction) of natural resources such as<br \/>\nwater, land and biodiversity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mounting<br \/>\npressures from investors, regulators, shareholders, customers and employees<br \/>\nalso drive the need for improved environmental-impact reporting in data center<br \/>\noperations. However, many data center operators lack sustainability expertise<br \/>\nand face a daunting task of determining what metrics to track and strategies to<br \/>\nimplement. Schneider Electric&#8217;s framework was developed by its Energy<br \/>\nManagement Research Center leveraging expertise from ESG experts,<br \/>\nsustainability consultants, data center scientists, and data center solution<br \/>\narchitects to take the guesswork out of measurement and reporting. The Energy<br \/>\nManagement Research Center was established in 2002 and has developed more than<br \/>\n200 vendor-neutral whitepapers and trade-off tools available for free to the<br \/>\nindustry. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Data Center Sustainability Metrics<br \/>\nDrive Sustainability Strategy <\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Tracking and<br \/>\nreporting on standardized sustainability metrics helps drive internal team<br \/>\nalignment improvements and increases transparency for external stakeholders,<br \/>\nincluding customers and regulators.
