\n2021 – <\/b>Hong Kong’s
\nprivate conglomerate, Nan Fung Group<\/b>, is honoured to announce that the Group’s
\nlandmark revitalisation project The Mills<\/b> has been awarded a Platinum
\nRating<\/b> in the Final Assessment of the BEAM Plus Existing Building category
\n(Comprehensive Scheme). This makes The Mills <\/b>the city’s first historical
\nand retrofitted building recognized with the award’s highest rating. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The
\nMills<\/b>, located in Hong
\nKong’s industrial district of Tsuen Wan, was once three separate buildings operating
\nas textile mills, together supplying much of the region’s denim during the city’s
\nindustrial and textile heyday in the 1950s. The success of these mills was the
\ncornerstone of Nan Fung Group’s strength that eventually enabled the Group to
\nbecome one of Hong Kong’s largest private conglomerates. In 2018, to honour the
\ntextile legacy of the Group and give back to the community, the three buildings
\nwere transformed into a single coherent complex, collectively named The
\nMills<\/b>, and became a popular local cultural destination.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

After years
\nof groundwork integrating sustainable, innovative designs and solutions into this
\nmassive revitalisation, The Mills<\/b> has been recognised for its outstanding
\nperformance in seven key areas: management, site aspects, materials and waste aspects,
\nwater use, energy use, indoor environmental quality, innovations and additions.
\nBEAM Plus is Hong Kong’s leading initiative for independent assessments of buildings
\nsustainability performance, recognised and certified by the Hong Kong Green
\nBuilding Council.<\/p>\n

Vanessa
\nCheung, Founder of The Mills<\/b> and Group Managing Director of Nan Fung
\nGroup, said, “We are thrilled and delighted that The Mills<\/b> has received
\nsuch prestigious recognition. This Platinum Rating is an affirmation of the Group’s
\ncommitment to weaving sustainability into business. More importantly, the awarded

In 2019, The
\nMills<\/b> was awarded the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage
\nConservation under New Designs in the Heritage Contexts category. Other
\ncertifications include winning the Grand Award under the Existing Building
\n(Completed Projects \u2013 Commercial Building) category at The Green Building Award
\n2019 and achieving LEED Gold rating in 2018. <\/p>\n

Sustainability
\nat The Mills: from upcycled materials to the community<\/b><\/p>\n

The design
\nof The Mills<\/b> strives to preserve the original architecture and its half-century
\nhistory while enhancing existing facilities into a user-friendly complex that meets
\nthe highest sustainability standards. Seamlessly woven into the neighbourhood, a
\nseries of accessible new entrances, lanes, rooftops, and glass bridges are carefully
\nthought-out additions, such that the community can enjoy open spaces at The
\nMills to their fullest. Efficient lighting automation, solar hot water systems,
\nand a mobile-based BMS system are also utilised at The Mills<\/b> to maximize
\nenergy savings. <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The
\nMills<\/b>‘ commitment
\nin sustainability is evident in all that it does \u2013 from its extensive range of community
\nprogrammes, down to oft-overlooked details in daily operations \u2013 sustainability
\nis in its DNA. For instance, The<\/b> Mills<\/b> launched a paper recycling
\ninitiative in partnership with Mil Mill<\/b>, Hong Kong’s first carton
\nrecycling mill, to advocate for a self-sustaining circular economy; a blend of
\nlegacy and innovation \u2013 a demonstration of textile recycling and upcycling using
\nthe iconic Garment-to-Garment Recycling System (G2G); The Mills<\/b> also houses
\neco-conscious tenants, such as Green Ladies & Green Little, who sells
\npre-loved clothing to raise awareness towards sustainable living habits. Last
\nbut not least, extensive textile-related exhibitions, tours, and workshops are
\nregularly curated on-site to educate students and the community on fusing
\nsustainability into daily routines.<\/p>\n
