Mr. Bjoern Lindner, President of the GCC,
\nstated in the opening speech that the German business community has long placed
\nsignificant emphasis on sustainability and protection of our natural world at
\nits core. One-third of the GCC members come from the supply chain industry, and are happy to see
\nhow all stakeholders work together to address the microplastics issue. <\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
T\u00dcV Rheinland shared background and summaries
\non its textiles-microplastics research\/initiatives and introduced the concept
\nof linking data about microplastics shedding at the pre-consumer stage, the
\nfabric composition\/design stage, and what is detected during testing at the
\ngarment\/fabric level (as per TMC, AATCC methods).<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
According to the International Union for
\nConservation of Nature (IUCN), 35% of the ocean’s microplastics come from
\nsynthetic textiles. Microplastics shedding at the finished product level can be
\ncorrelated with microplastics shedding at the pre-consumer stage in production
\nprocesses depending on wet processes, fiber construction depending, fiber
\ncomposition, etc. The full related data could perhaps tell a story to designers
\nand manufacturers that they be able to configure their production processes in
\norder to eliminate microplastics shedding, so the idea is to combine consumer
\nstage data with pre-consumer stage data. <\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Dr. Cindy Lam and Dr. Frank Lam from HKUST
\ndeveloped the Smart Fish for real-time detection of microplastics in the ocean.
\nThe Smart Fish aims to replace lab-based testing for microplastics, which can
\nbe used in the future for different scenarios, including the textile industry. <\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Dr. Gloria Yao from HKRITA spoke about an
\nongoing project for microplastic fibre separation through sweeping acoustic
\nwaves. It expects the project at industrial scale, to agglomerate the filtered
\nmicroplastic to form a cluster in macroscopic scale to provide convenience for
\nany feasible after-treatment.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Gundolf Klaehn from GIZ introduced the
\nPromoting Sustainability in the Textile and Garment Industry on Asia (FABRIC)
\nprogram, which supports initiatives and innovation fostering the transitional
\nchange of the sector with the focus on reduction of harm to the environment and
\nimproving labour and living conditions.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
In his closing remarks, KC Lam, Head of
\nConsulate and Chamber Engagement, Invest Hong Kong stated: “We have started to
\neducate the consumer on microplastics. They will soon be demanding better and
\nhigher standards for companies to live up to.”\u00a0
\nMicroplastics have become a plastic pollutant of oceans on a global
\nscale. Shaping solutions will include approaches based on detection and
\nremoval, product design and lifecycle thinking, as well as the involvement of
\nkey stakeholders.<\/p>\n
