The report relies&#13;<br \/>\non data from Carousell Group&#8217;s brands and the Carousell Sustainability Survey,&#13;<br \/>\nwhich surveyed over 3,000 of the brand&#8217;s users, both buyers and sellers, in June 2021 \u00a0By analysing the data and responses, the Group&#13;<br \/>\nhopes to drive behavioural change for sustainability and a circular economy. <\/p>\n<p>A disruptive&#13;<br \/>\nform of e-commerce, recommerce addresses the problem of overconsumption&#13;<br \/>\ndirectly through encouraging the buying and selling of preowned goods. Over&#13;<br \/>\nrecent years, the trend has seen a sharp rise across the Greater Southeast Asia&#13;<br \/>\nregion, as households become more aware of the need to shop responsibly. <\/p>\n<p><b><u>Top 4 unexpected Hong Kong market facts from the report<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong is a key market for&#13;<br \/>\nCarousell with one in five&#13;<br \/>\nHongkongers being Carousellers and 85% of users having made at least one&#13;<br \/>\nsecondhand purchase on the platform in the past. While secondhand has become a&#13;<br \/>\nchoice welcomed by local consumers, data that emerges from the report provides&#13;<br \/>\nmore insight into their consumption patterns. <b\/><\/p>\n<p><b>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Almost half of Hongkongers, who have bought secondhand before, do so&#13;<br \/>\nfor environmental reasons, which is significantly higher than neighbouring&#13;<br \/>\nmarkets\u00a0 <\/b><\/p>\n<p>In terms of&#13;<br \/>\nsustainability, Hong Kong demonstrates positive results. With 45% choosing to&#13;<br \/>\nbuy secondhand for environmental reasons, the city ranked first, ahead of&#13;<br \/>\nSingapore and Taiwan at 30%, demonstrating a higher level of eco-consciousness&#13;<br \/>\namong Hong Kong shoppers.\u00a0 16% of&#13;<br \/>\nrespondents who have bought secondhand items before also stated that they only&#13;<br \/>\nbuy secondhand where possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Value for money comes out on top as a reason&#13;<br \/>\nHongkongers buy secondhand items <\/b><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to&#13;<br \/>\nthe main reasons for choosing secondhand, the report results highlight that&#13;<br \/>\npragmatism comes out on top. The most popular reason across the region was&#13;<br \/>\nvalue for money, with Hong Kong ranking highest at 85%, followed by Malaysia at&#13;<br \/>\n78% and Singapore and Philippines at 74%. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Local consumers estimate owning 43 unwanted&#13;<br \/>\nitems that could be sold<\/b><\/p>\n<p>On average, each&#13;<br \/>\nHong Kong user has an estimated 43 unwanted items they store in their homes&#13;<br \/>\nthat could be sold, ranking the city third after Indonesia and Taiwan with an&#13;<br \/>\naverage of 57 and 52 unwanted items respectively. The highest among age groups&#13;<br \/>\nin the Hong Kong market, Generation X has an average of 49 unwanted items, implying that&#13;<br \/>\nmiddle-aged consumers have the highest potential of shifting their&#13;<br \/>\noverconsumption behaviour towards recommerce. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n<\/b><b>The pandemic increases the demand for secondhand&#13;<br \/>\ntoys and games <\/b><\/p>\n<p>The COVID-19&#13;<br \/>\npandemic has shaped consumer patterns and Carousell has been a key witness of&#13;<br \/>\nthese changes. Overtaking Woman&#8217;s Fashion, Toys and Games ranked as the top&#13;<br \/>\ncategory with the most demand for secondhand in 2020 as social distancing&#13;<br \/>\nregulations led to more people spending time at home. As the pandemic&#13;<br \/>\ncontinues, 44% of respondents selected Toys and Games as the most comfortable&#13;<br \/>\nsecondhand item to buy and sell in 2021. <\/p>\n<p><b><u>&#8220;Free Item&#8221; tops searches amongst Hongkongers <\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"_heading=h.gjdgxs\"\/>Looking&#13;<br \/>\nat keyword search trends for both new and secondhand items as a whole, 2020 saw&#13;<br \/>\nmany shifts in demand. The report highlighted that bargain hunters in Hong Kong&#13;<br \/>\nconsistently searched for &#8220;free&#8221; items on the platform, with the total search&#13;<br \/>\nnumber of free items reaching two million in three top categories: Furniture,&#13;<br \/>\nFootwear and Books, which amount to more than 10% of the total searches. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eager to make&#13;<br \/>\nuse of Hong Kong&#8217;s circular economy model as a potential second source of&#13;<br \/>\nincome, more Hongkongers are using secondhand platforms to increase their&#13;<br \/>\nmonthly income and Carousellers have demonstrated some encouraging optimism.&#13;<br \/>\nOut of the respondents from Hong Kong, 18.5% estimate that the platform can&#13;<br \/>\nhelp them to earn over HKD 10,000 through selling the unwanted items at home at&#13;<br \/>\none time. <\/p>\n<p><b>Kevin Huang, Managing Director of Carousell Hong Kong<\/b> said, &#8220;At Carousell, we regard ourselves as a disruptor that has&#13;<br \/>\ntransformed the secondhand buy-sell process into a reliable mobile experience.&#13;<br \/>\nWe are delighted to see that local consumers do not only buy secondhand items&#13;<br \/>\nfor their value, but also out of environmental concern.
