With an aim to promote the&#13;<br \/>\npublic&#8217;s awareness of environmental protection, the Action Center will stage&#13;<br \/>\ntwo art exhibitions, <b><i>Common Understanding \u00b7 Common Consensus \u00b7 Collective&#13;<br \/>\nAction<\/i><\/b> and <b><i>A Breeze from the Woods<\/i><\/b> in its first season.&#13;<br \/>\nEach in unique style carries equivalent message toward environmental concern.&#13;<br \/>\nThe Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is the funder for the Action Center&#8217;s&#13;<br \/>\nenvironmental programmes, exhibitions, and related expenses. In addition to&#13;<br \/>\nexhibitions, the Jockey Club &#8220;Begin in the Heart&#8221; Environmental Collective&#13;<br \/>\nAction Programme consists of a series of workshops, vegetarian cooking classes,&#13;<br \/>\nand themed talks on regimen, climate change and green architecture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">Chief Executive Officer of the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi&#13;<br \/>\nFoundation Hong Kong Ltd. (&#8220;Tzu Chi Hong Kong&#8221;) cum representative of the&#13;<br \/>\nExhibition Curatorial Committee Chung Ling SZE explained, &#8220;In addition to the&#13;<br \/>\nAction Center&#8217;s regular educational programs for the community and schools,&#13;<br \/>\n&#8216;The Planet Room&#8217; and &#8216;Jockey Club Eco Co-Creation Space&#8217; are two spaces&#13;<br \/>\ndesigned for exhibition activities. We hope\u00a0<\/span>to share our beliefs on &#8216;Common Understanding, Common Consensus,&#13;<br \/>\nCollective Action&#8217;, &#8216;Purification at Source&#8217; and the 7Rs<sup>[1]<\/sup> spirit through cooperation with\u00a0different artists at both spaces; thereby, encouraging visitors to practice the environmental protection concept of &#8216;Co-exist with Earth'&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Climate change has&#13;<br \/>\nbrought forth extreme natural hazards. Over the years, excessive use of fossil&#13;<br \/>\nfuels, deforestation and animal husbandry, along with overconsumption have&#13;<br \/>\nseverely damaged the ecological environment, leading to seasonal instability&#13;<br \/>\nand subsequently wind, water, fire and land disasters. Architect cum&#13;<br \/>\nrepresentative of the Exhibition Curatorial Committee Corrin CHAN pointed out,&#13;<br \/>\n&#8220;When it came to curating these two exhibitions, our curatorial committee&#13;<br \/>\nand team adhered to the belief of &#8216;Co-exist with Earth&#8217;. Backed by statistical&#13;<br \/>\nresearch, the opening exhibition <b><i>Common<\/i> <i>Understanding \u00b7 Common&#13;<br \/>\nConsensus \u00b7 Collective Action<\/i> <\/b>reveals the catastrophic imprints from&#13;<br \/>\nwind disasters, floods, water pollution, forest fires, and human behavior on&#13;<br \/>\nthe earth through a combination of visuals, short films, audio installation and&#13;<br \/>\nexhibits, aiming to connect visitors with their body and mind. The other themed&#13;<br \/>\nexhibition <b><i>A Breeze from the Woods<\/i><\/b> showcases the joy to life with&#13;<br \/>\nthe reuse of waste wood.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b><u>Opening Exhibition &#8211; <\/u><\/b><b><i><u>Common<\/u><\/i><\/b><b><u> <i>Understanding \u00b7&#13;<br \/>\nCommon Consensus \u00b7 Collective Action<\/i> at The Planet Room (Permanent&#13;<br \/>\nExhibition starting November 20, 2021)<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The exhibition begins with <b>Common Understanding<\/b> toward the global warming crisis and its major causes, sets to achieve <b>Common Consensus<\/b> among visitors on the importance to phasing out the continuous climatic hazards through the learning of 7Rs rule, and encourages the visitors to become a <b>Common Action<\/b> Taker after awakening, live a simple life by implementing &#8220;Purification at Source&#8221;, and reach a harmonic co-existence with our planet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><u>Recommended viewing sequence for <b><i>Common&#13;<br \/>\nUnderstanding <\/i><\/b><\/u><b><i><u>\u00b7 Common Consensus \u00b7&#13;<br \/>\nCollective Action<\/u><\/i><\/b><u> is as follows:<\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>Wind<\/b> &#8211; Through short films to view&#13;<br \/>\ncasualties and financial losses around the globe caused by wind disasters, such&#13;<br \/>\nas tornadoes and tropical cyclones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>Water<\/b> &#8211; An abnormal climate has caused&#13;<br \/>\nlocalized flooding disasters on the planet, as well as heavy rains and&#13;<br \/>\nblizzards to occur one after another, while in some places there have been&#13;<br \/>\npersistent droughts resulting from insufficient rainfall. The interactive installation&#13;<br \/>\n&#8220;<b>Hong Kong in 10 Bottles<\/b>&#8221; assessed the quality of Hong Kong&#8217;s&#13;<br \/>\nwater resources whose samples were collected from 10 places in town by Tzu Chi&#13;<br \/>\nvolunteers from different age groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>Fire <\/b>\u2013 Wildfires caused by lightning&#13;<br \/>\nstrikes, droughts and human factors not only burn down forests and human living&#13;<br \/>\nfacilities, but the toxic smoke they produced also induces respiratory&#13;<br \/>\ndiseases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>Land<\/b> \u2013 The impact of human&#13;<br \/>\ndestruction on mountains, forests, and land are evident when a number of severe&#13;<br \/>\nsoil erosion occur amid earthquakes and heavy rains. Chris CHEUNG (h0nh1m)&#8217;s&#13;<br \/>\ninteractive ink installation <b><i>Carbon Reveries<\/i><\/b> records the&#13;<br \/>\nstupefying increase in carbon emission over the past 63 years. 12 bamboo pipes&#13;<br \/>\nare used to form a bamboo grove. Each corresponds to a set of annual carbon&#13;<br \/>\nemission data, allowing visitors to rethink the relationship between carbon&#13;<br \/>\nemission, nature&#8217;s vibrancy and human intervention to the ecosystem. Chris&#13;<br \/>\nexplained, &#8220;This work makes visitors feel as if they were in the bamboo grove,&#13;<br \/>\nbreathing in sync with the nature and sensing the vibrancy of nature.\u00a0When visitors touch each bamboo pipe with their own hands, the warm temperature of their palm will make the ink color of the bamboo pipe gradually fade out, implying human intervention to the nature.\u00a0 The entire installation also looks like a set of factory exhaust pipes, reminding visitors that global warming is a crisis that brooks no further delay.&#8221; Upon understanding the irregularities of wind, water, fire and land, visitors can meditate at the round-shaped mediation area to reflect on what have been seen, heard, and felt; together with the round, mellow and harmonious sound of singing bowls, the entire setup is intended to awaken and inspire visitors to environmental protection from the body, mind to consciousness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b><u>Themed&#13;<br \/>\nExhibition \u2013 <i>A&#13;<br \/>\nBreeze from the Woods<\/i> at Jockey Club Eco Co-Creati<\/u><\/b><b><u>on<\/u><\/b><b><u> Space (November 20, 2021 to March 12, 2022)<\/u><\/b><b><u\/><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Woodwork artist Che LAM (Che Gor) has been engaged in hand-made woodwork&#13;<br \/>\nfor nearly two decades. His themed exhibition <b><i>A Breeze from the Woods<\/i><\/b>&#13;<br \/>\nfeatures a large-scale installation of 108 wooden sharks of various sizes.&#13;<br \/>\nHanging down horizontally from the ceiling to the ground, this installation&#13;<br \/>\nbrings visitors the pleasure of being in the deepness of the ocean, where they&#13;<br \/>\ngaze face-to-face with the sharks. As an enthusiastic diver himself, Che Gor&#13;<br \/>\nthinks that sharks are not terrible.\u00a0 The&#13;<br \/>\nstronger preying upon the weaker follows the law of nature, while high-end&#13;<br \/>\npredators in the food chain like sharks are only small creatives existing in&#13;<br \/>\nnature, yet the most important link to maintain the marine ecosystem. There are&#13;<br \/>\nalso several different mortise and tenon wooden furniture and toys on display&#13;<br \/>\nat the same venue, including tenon wooden stools, wooden radios, wooden boxes&#13;<br \/>\nwith frosted glass depicting begonia flower motifs, wooden mobile phone&#13;<br \/>\nholders, etc. Che Gor says, &#8220;Tzu Chi Environmental Action Center&#8217;s belief&#13;<br \/>\nin cherishing materials coincides with my belief in &#8216;trees have life&#8217; and the&#13;<br \/>\nrecycling of surplus wood and waste wood from any renovation projects. \u00a0I believe visitors to the Action Center will&#13;<br \/>\nunderstand the power\u00a0of environmental protection and will use all natural resources in a proper way.&#8221; A series of sharing sessions and workshops will be held in December, allowing visitors to craft wooden tops, mobile phone holders and experience tenon joints of wooden stroller assembly, etc. For registration and details, please refer to the Action Center&#8217;s official website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">Members of&#13;<br \/>\nthe Tzu Chi Environmental Action Center Curatorial Committee include Chung Ling&#13;<br \/>\nSZE, Shu Lin LEE, Wing Kam LEUNG, Yuk Lin CHOW, Ching Hsiu HUANG, Man Lee NG&#13;<br \/>\nand Corrin CHAN.
