Sitharam, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati as&#13;<br \/>\npanelists; and Mr Anton John Crace, Editor &amp; Programme Designer of QS, as&#13;<br \/>\nthe moderator.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The sector&#13;<br \/>\nleaders, who joined the Presidents Panel with the theme &#8220;<b>Building resilient universities for tomorrow: An Asian perspective<\/b>&#8220;&#13;<br \/>\nyesterday (1 November) at the QS APPLE 2021 Conference, also agreed that&#13;<br \/>\nartificial intelligence (AI) will empower both educators and students to cope&#13;<br \/>\nwith future education and workforce trends.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The QS APPLE 2021&#13;<br \/>\nConference, hosted by <b>Hong Kong Baptist&#13;<br \/>\nUniversity<\/b> (HKBU) and co-hosted by <b>Prince&#13;<br \/>\nof Songkla University<\/b> in Thailand, is being held virtually from 1 to 3&#13;<br \/>\nNovember with the theme <b>&#8220;Future&#13;<br \/>\nRebalance: Emerging trends and workforce in the Asia Pacific&#8221;<\/b>. The&#13;<br \/>\nconference features more than 80 distinguished speakers from world-leading&#13;<br \/>\nuniversities and organisations, and the programme includes keynote speeches,&#13;<br \/>\ndebates, panel discussions and case studies that reflect the opportunities and&#13;<br \/>\ntrends in education in the Asia-Pacific region.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In his opening&#13;<br \/>\nremarks at the conference, <b>Professor&#13;<br \/>\nAlexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU<\/b>, pointed out that&#13;<br \/>\nhigher education is in the midst of an exciting transformation brought about&#13;<br \/>\nnot only by the pandemic, but also the incredible advances happening in AI and&#13;<br \/>\nthe technology sector. He said that in this fast-evolving world, we need to&#13;<br \/>\nrace against time: &#8220;Education is the key to adapting to new technologies, and&#13;<br \/>\nuniversities will play a key role in closing an imminent skills gap by enabling&#13;<br \/>\ntheir students to acquire transferable competencies alongside technological&#13;<br \/>\nskills.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Universities must&#13;<br \/>\nsow the seeds of systemic change to nurture cultures that emphasise care,&#13;<br \/>\ncollaboration and community engagement if we are to reap the harvest of&#13;<br \/>\ntransdisciplinary research \u2013 a rich yield where scientific rigour, societal&#13;<br \/>\nimpact and wider engagement collide,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Ben Sowter, Senior Vice President of QS Intelligence&#13;<br \/>\nUnit<\/b>, said: &#8220;As a consequence of&#13;<br \/>\nrecent challenges faced, and largely adapted to, by universities, the cat is&#13;<br \/>\ntruly out of the bag \u2013 universities can change and they can do it fast. On what&#13;<br \/>\nother challenges should they next focus their collective might? The primary&#13;<br \/>\npurpose of this conference is not merely to sustain the conversation, but to&#13;<br \/>\nevoke action. Beyond action universities might take to reinforce their own&#13;<br \/>\nresilience as institutions, to what they can do to augment ours as a species.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Conference&#8217;s Presidents&#13;<br \/>\nPanel featured higher education leaders in the region, including <b>Professor Alexander Wai<\/b> of HKBU; <b>Professor Lily Kong<\/b>, President of the&#13;<br \/>\nSingapore Management University; <b>Professor&#13;<br \/>\nJoonki Paik<\/b>, Provost and Executive Vice-President of Research of the&#13;<br \/>\nChung-Ang University in Korea; <b>Professor&#13;<br \/>\nYang Bin<\/b>, Vice-President and Provost of Tsinghua University in mainland&#13;<br \/>\nChina; and <b>Professor T.G. Sitharam<\/b>,&#13;<br \/>\nDirector of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, as panellists.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The panellists shared&#13;<br \/>\ntheir visions and experience on how we can build resilient universities in the&#13;<br \/>\nAsia-Pacific region that can help students flourish in the face of an uncertain&#13;<br \/>\nfuture that has been brought about by recent rapid technological advancements and&#13;<br \/>\nthe COVID-19 pandemic. The importance of both natural and social sciences, as&#13;<br \/>\nseen in transdisciplinary research in terms of addressing grand global&#13;<br \/>\nchallenges, was also ascertained.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At HKBU, we&#13;<br \/>\nfoster transdisciplinary research with a focus on three areas. The first one is&#13;<br \/>\nwellness, and it includes health, food, drug discovery and Chinese medicine.&#13;<br \/>\nAnother area is art-tech, which embraces visualisation technologies for&#13;<br \/>\ntraditional art history and culture. All these areas are powered by&#13;<br \/>\ntechnologies including AI and big data, which is our third area of focus.
