These three centres, which have commenced&#13;<br \/>\noperation, are i) the <b>Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Design (AiDLab)<\/b>, ii) the <b>Centre for Advances in Reliability and&#13;<br \/>\nSafety (CAiRS)<\/b>, and iii) the <b>Centre&#13;<br \/>\nfor Eye and Vision Research (CEVR)<\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>PolyU has also become the first local&#13;<br \/>\ncollaborating institution of the <b>&#8220;Centre&#13;<br \/>\nfor Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Hong Kong Institute of Science &amp;&#13;<br \/>\nInnovation, Chinese Academy of Sciences&#8221;<\/b>. Established by the Institute of&#13;<br \/>\nAutomation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Centre has been&#13;<br \/>\nadmitted to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.media-outreach.com\/cdn-cgi\/l\/email-protection\" class=\"__cf_email__\" data-cfemail=\"abeae2f9ebe2c5c5c4e3e0\">[email\u00a0protected]<\/a> under InnoHK Clusters. With a longstanding and close&#13;<br \/>\ncollaborative relationship, PolyU and CAS, based on their existing cooperation,&#13;<br \/>\nwill further conduct in-depth research collaboration and academic exchange&#13;<br \/>\nactivities in frontier research in data science and artificial intelligence, to&#13;<br \/>\njointly promote the development of the AI industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Deputy President and Provost of PolyU, Professor Wing-tak Wong<\/b>, is pleased with the University&#8217;s&#13;<br \/>\ncontribution to the InnoHK initiative, stating that, &#8220;Innovation&#13;<br \/>\nand technology (I&amp;T) has always been one of the key drivers of economic&#13;<br \/>\ndevelopment. With the rapid development of the Nation and the Greater Bay Area&#13;<br \/>\nbringing unprecedented opportunities for I&amp;T, Hong Kong will play an even&#13;<br \/>\nmore important role in the ongoing process of innovation.&#8221; He added, &#8220;By&#13;<br \/>\npartnering with world-acclaimed institutions to establish research centres in&#13;<br \/>\nInnoHK&#8217;s two research clusters, PolyU hopes to fully leverage each institution&#8217;s&#13;<br \/>\nacademic strengths to bring about significant research breakthroughs, and thereby&#13;<br \/>\ncreate impactful technology that boosts the economy and brings benefits to&#13;<br \/>\nsociety.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Professor Naren Barfield, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost of the&#13;<br \/>\nRoyal College of Art<\/b> said, &#8220;We are delighted to partner with&#13;<br \/>\nPolyU to establish a world-class centre for research in Artificial Intelligence&#13;<br \/>\nand Design. This strategic partnership integrates AI into the design of&#13;<br \/>\nproducts and services, delivering vital research to understand the future of&#13;<br \/>\nsociety and the economy, interrogating our future requirements and humanising&#13;<br \/>\nthe fourth industrial revolution. As the world&#8217;s leading art and design&#13;<br \/>\nuniversity, the Royal College of Art brings to AiDLab its expertise in&#13;<br \/>\ncross-disciplinary research, human-centred design and creative innovation, to&#13;<br \/>\nshape the industrial and social futures of the 21st century.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Professor Michael G.&#13;<br \/>\nPecht, Director of the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE) of&#13;<br \/>\nthe University of Maryland, College Park, USA<\/b> said, &#8220;CAiRS is a collaboration between PolyU and CALCE, that&#13;<br \/>\naims to conduct research and development to enable advanced design and&#13;<br \/>\nmanufacturing, and to test the next generation of reliable and safe electronics&#13;<br \/>\nand components for transportation, consumer products, telecommunication&#13;<br \/>\nsystems, public utilities and other applications in Hong Kong. Together, we&#13;<br \/>\nhope to create a new paradigm for reliability science and promote customised product&#13;<br \/>\nhealth management for different industry sectors, using real-time, in-situ,&#13;<br \/>\nartificial intelligence-based reliability and safety analytics.&#8221;\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Bob Lemieux, Dean of Science <\/b><b>at the University of Waterloo<\/b> said, &#8220;We are proud to be partnering with an exceptional institution&#13;<br \/>\nlike PolyU on this critical initiative. CEVR is already bringing the University&#13;<br \/>\nof Waterloo&#8217;s entrepreneurial culture to Hong Kong as the research team tackles&#13;<br \/>\nthe world&#8217;s biggest questions in the field of vision science \u2013 from discovery and&#13;<br \/>\nclinical application to commercialisation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Going forward, PolyU will continue its&#13;<br \/>\nefforts in addressing the ever-changing needs of society by promoting&#13;<br \/>\nhigh-impact research and fostering collaborations with world-leading&#13;<br \/>\ninstitutes, industry partners as well as the government, in order to contribute&#13;<br \/>\nfurther to the future research clusters of InnoHK. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b><i><u>Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in&#13;<br \/>\nDesign (AiDLab) <\/u><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with the <b>Royal College of&#13;<br \/>\nArt<\/b><b>, UK<\/b>, PolyU established the&#13;<br \/>\nAiDLab under the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.media-outreach.com\/cdn-cgi\/l\/email-protection\" class=\"__cf_email__\" data-cfemail=\"47060e15070e2929280f0c\">[email\u00a0protected]<\/a> cluster to integrate innovative AI technologies into&#13;<br \/>\ndesign to address society&#8217;s needs for creativity,\u00a0efficiency and&#13;<br \/>\ncustomisation of products and services. AiDLab is the world&#8217;s first research&#13;<br \/>\nlaboratory specialising in interdisciplinary AI and design innovations. Its&#13;<br \/>\ncutting-edge research will create impacts on society, industry and policy that&#13;<br \/>\nenhance quality of life. Three research programmes at AiDLab include Ergonomic&#13;<br \/>\nand Inclusive Design, Innovation in Product and Service Design, and Intelligent&#13;<br \/>\nFashion Design and Quality Control. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b><i><u>Centre for Advances in Reliability and Safety&#13;<br \/>\n(CAiRS) <\/u><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>CAiRS has been initiated by PolyU under the&#13;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.media-outreach.com\/cdn-cgi\/l\/email-protection\" class=\"__cf_email__\" data-cfemail=\"1e5f574c5e577070715655\">[email\u00a0protected]<\/a> cluster and the key research collaborator is the <b>University of Maryland, College Park, USA<\/b>.&#13;<br \/>\nCAiRS&#8217; mission is to develop new approaches using AI methodologies for&#13;<br \/>\ncustomised management, and to ensure the reliability and safety of products and&#13;<br \/>\nsystems used in robotics, medical devices, vehicles, telecommunication,&#13;<br \/>\nconsumer products, public utilities, transportation, microelectronics, power&#13;<br \/>\ndevices, sensors and IoT products as well as a broad range of Advanced&#13;<br \/>\nManufacturing applications. These research applications and deliverables will&#13;<br \/>\ncontribute significantly in Smart City development. Five research programmes at&#13;<br \/>\nCAiRS, namely Anomaly Detection and Syndromic Surveillance, Innovative&#13;<br \/>\nDiagnostics for Product Health Management, Prognostics for Remaining Useful&#13;<br \/>\nLife Assessment, Safety Assurance to improve Functional Safety, and Data Analytics&#13;<br \/>\nPlatform for Reliability have commenced. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b><i><u>Centre for Eye and Vision Research (CEVR) <\/u><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Under the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.media-outreach.com\/cdn-cgi\/l\/email-protection\" class=\"__cf_email__\" data-cfemail=\"410924202d352901082f2f2e090a\">[email\u00a0protected]<\/a> cluster, CEVR has&#13;<br \/>\nbeen set up as a joint partnership between PolyU and the <b>University of Waterloo, Canada<\/b>. CEVR promotes eye health with&#13;<br \/>\nclinical, basic and applied research, and develops ground-breaking technologies&#13;<br \/>\nto prevent vision loss and preserve sight among the ageing population.
