But a new&#13;<br \/>\nresearch from Ipsos, conducted in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsk.com\/\">GSK<\/a> Consumer Healthcare&#13;<br \/>\nindicates these links are not yet widely known. The findings point to a worrying&#13;<br \/>\nconcern that people may not be proactively looking after their oral health as&#13;<br \/>\nthey should be, and therefore risk not experiencing the wider health benefits&#13;<br \/>\ngood oral health may bring.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">A new study by Ipsos and GSK Consumer&#13;<br \/>\nHealthcare, with 4500 participants across 9 countries,<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u00a0including 500 participants from Singapore. <a name=\"_Hlk79049968\"\/>Key&#13;<br \/>\nfindings from respondents in Singapore highlight low public awareness on the&#13;<br \/>\nimpact of good oral health to our overall health and the need to promote good&#13;<br \/>\noral health habits in Singapor<\/span>e.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><b>Low&#13;<br \/>\nawareness of the importance of good oral health during pregnancy<\/b><\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">During pregnancy, higher hormone levels can change the way the&#13;<br \/>\nbody reacts to<\/span><span class=\"tabchar\"> <\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">plaque build-up, causing swollen gums, an early sign of gum&#13;<br \/>\ndisease. Pregnant<\/span><span class=\"tabchar\"> <\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">women\u00a0with severe gum disease, also known&#13;<br \/>\nas\u00a0periodontitis, are more at risk<\/span> of <span class=\"normaltextrun\">giving\u00a0birth\u00a0prematurely, suffer pre-eclampsia, or have&#13;<br \/>\na baby with low birth weight \u2013\u00a0meaning good oral health habits and seeking&#13;<br \/>\nadvice from healthcare professionals are critical<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Yet, just 46% of respondents to the survey&#13;<br \/>\nwere aware that good oral healthcare\u00a0can support a healthier pregnancy,&#13;<br \/>\nwith lower risk of complications.\u00a0Similarly, the awareness of the risks of&#13;<br \/>\npoor oral health for pregnancy among older<\/span><span class=\"tabchar\"> <\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">respondents\u00a0above 50, who will&#13;<br \/>\nbe\u00a0grandparents and\u00a0often\u00a0advisors, was just as low at 45%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><b>Higher&#13;<br \/>\nrisk groups unaware of oral health links to diabetes\u00a0<\/b><\/span><span class=\"scxw198847212\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Poor oral health can cause gum inflammation and&#13;<br \/>\ninfection. This can make it harder for the body to control blood sugar\u00a0levels,&#13;<br \/>\nand\u00a0respond appropriately to insulin<sup>2<\/sup>. In turn, high glucose&#13;<br \/>\nlevels in the saliva of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes sufferers can increase the&#13;<br \/>\nrisk of dental decay, and their high blood sugar levels mean general wounds,&#13;<br \/>\nincluding those in the mouth, heal more slowly.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">While 52% of all respondents and 50% of respondents over 50 were&#13;<br \/>\naware that good oral health has a\u00a0positive impact on\u00a0helping to&#13;<br \/>\nmaintain\u00a0blood sugar levels and\u00a0manage diabetes, this number dropped&#13;<br \/>\nto only 36% for respondents between the age 18-29.\u00a0 A rising rates of diabetes including an&#13;<br \/>\nestimated 14% Singaporeans aged 18-19 years being diagnosed with pre-diabetes<sup>3<\/sup>,&#13;<br \/>\nsuggests a need for targeted awareness raising and education among all&#13;<br \/>\nage-groups.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><b>Oral&#13;<br \/>\nhealth links to cardiovascular disease better recognised\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Research shows that people with\u00a0<u>severe<\/u>\u00a0gum&#13;<br \/>\ndisease are at higher risk of heart\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tabchar\">&#13;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"scxw198847212\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span class=\"normaltextrun\">disease. The bacteria that&#13;<br \/>\nattack gums can spread throughout the body in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"scxw198847212\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the bloodstream and can cause inflammation<sup>4<\/sup>.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">55%\u00a0of respondents were aware that good oral health habits&#13;<br \/>\ncan reduce the risk of<\/span><span class=\"tabchar\"> <\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">developing cardiovascular diseases.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The study highlighted the significant role of regular dental&#13;<br \/>\nvisits in improving understanding of the relevance of oral health to&#13;<br \/>\noverall\u00a0health.\u00a0Respondents\u00a0who visited a dentist more&#13;<br \/>\nfrequently\u00a0during the pandemic compared to before\u00a0were more aware of&#13;<br \/>\nthe impact of oral health on all conditions surveyed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"scxw198847212\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>76% of&#13;<br \/>\nrespondents in South East Asia who visited the dentist more frequently compared&#13;<br \/>\nto pre-Covid times were aware that good oral health can improve the chance of&#13;<br \/>\nhealthy pregnancy compared to 58% of respondents on average.\u00a0<span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"normaltextrun\">77% of&#13;<br \/>\nrespondents in South East Asia who visited the dentist more frequently compared&#13;<br \/>\nto pre-Covid\u00a0times\u00a0were aware that good oral health can reduce the&#13;<br \/>\nrisk of cardiovascular disease, compared to 65% of respondents on&#13;<br \/>\naverage.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"normaltextrun\">74% of&#13;<br \/>\nrespondents in South East Asia who visited the dentist more frequently compared&#13;<br \/>\nto pre-Covid times were aware that good oral health can help to manage diabetes&#13;<br \/>\ncompared to 62% average of respondents on average.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><b>Dr&#13;<br \/>\nLim Lii, Dentist, Dental On The Bay, said:<\/b><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u00a0&#8220;<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><i>The association&#13;<br \/>\nbetween oral health and overall health is well-documented by the scientific&#13;<br \/>\ncommunity. However, public awareness of the wider benefits of careful&#13;<br \/>\ntooth-brushing, taking care of your oral cavity and regular dentist visits&#13;<br \/>\nremains worryingly low.
