{"id":17469,"date":"2021-09-14T04:45:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-14T04:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eodishasamachar.com\/en\/2021\/09\/14\/kroll-worlds-biggest-corporates-hit-hardest-by-illicit-activity-despite-bolstering-defences\/"},"modified":"2021-09-14T04:45:00","modified_gmt":"2021-09-14T04:45:00","slug":"kroll-worlds-biggest-corporates-hit-hardest-by-illicit-activity-despite-bolstering-defences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eodishasamachar.com\/en\/2021\/09\/14\/kroll-worlds-biggest-corporates-hit-hardest-by-illicit-activity-despite-bolstering-defences\/","title":{"rendered":"Kroll: World\u2019s biggest corporates hit hardest by illicit activity despite bolstering defences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><i>57%&#13;<br \/>\nof respondents at US$15+ billion turnover companies reported &#8220;very significant&#8221;&#13;<br \/>\nimpacts of corruption and illicit activity \u00a0<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Proactive&#13;<br \/>\ndata analytics to mitigate risks employed by nearly all respondents (86%)<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Almost&#13;<br \/>\na third (29%) of respondents in China rank employees&#8217; actions as the top threat&#13;<br \/>\nrelated to bribery and corruption risk, the highest percentage of all countries&#13;<br \/>\nsurveyed<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>HONG KONG SAR &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.media-outreach.com\/\">Media&#13;<br \/>\nOutReach<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a014 September 2021 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kroll.com\/en\">Kroll,<\/a> the world&#8217;s premier provider of services and digital&#13;<br \/>\nproducts related to governance, risk and transparency, today revealed that the&#13;<br \/>\nworld&#8217;s biggest companies were feeling the greatest impact of corruption and illicit&#13;<br \/>\nactivity in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kroll&#8217;s&#13;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kroll.com\/en\/insights\/publications\/global-fraud-and-risk-report-2021\"><i>Global Fraud and Risk Report<\/i><\/a> shows that 57% of respondents at companies&#13;<br \/>\nwith a turnover of more than US$15 billion reported a very significant impact of&#13;<br \/>\nillicit activity, such as fraud, corruption and money laundering on their&#13;<br \/>\norganisation, with a further quarter (25%) describing the impact as somewhat significant.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This&#13;<br \/>\ntrend continued for firms with an annual revenue of between US$10 billion \u2013US$15&#13;<br \/>\nbillion, with 48% of respondents saying their organisation had been <i>very<\/i>&#13;<br \/>\nsignificantly impacted and 44% reporting the impact was somewhat significant.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The survey&#13;<br \/>\nhighlighted that corporates were placing an increased focus on proactive&#13;<br \/>\nmeasures to manage bribery and corruption risk, including enterprise-wide risk&#13;<br \/>\nassessments (82%) and the use of proactive data analytics (86%). <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore,&#13;<br \/>\nnearly three quarters (72%) said bribery and corruption issues were being given&#13;<br \/>\nsufficient board-level attention and investment. However, despite these&#13;<br \/>\ndefences being employed, 82% overall still felt corruption and illicit activity&#13;<br \/>\nwere having a significant impact on their organisation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Respondents in China were more concerned about&#13;<br \/>\ninternal and external bribery and corruption risks compared to other regions&#13;<br \/>\nsurveyed. More than a third of respondents (34%) cited weaknesses in&#13;<br \/>\nrecord-keeping as their top concern, higher than the global average of 31%.&#13;<br \/>\nEmployees&#8217; actions was second on the list at 29%, again above the global&#13;<br \/>\naverage (23%). Almost four in 10 (37%) respondents in China cited lack of&#13;<br \/>\nvisibility over third parties as their top concern related to bribery and&#13;<br \/>\ncorruption, also greater than the global average (46%). <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Violet Ho,&#13;<br \/>\nSenior Managing Director and Head of Greater China, Forensic Investigations and&#13;<br \/>\nIntelligence, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has&#13;<br \/>\nbeen a challenging year for corporates, with organizations around the world&#13;<br \/>\nfacing threats from all angles, including increasingly complex supply chains&#13;<br \/>\nand the impact of the global pandemic. It&#8217;s encouraging to see that companies&#13;<br \/>\nin China and other regions are strengthening defences with proactive measures&#13;<br \/>\nsuch as data analytics and that bribery and corruption risk is on the boardroom&#13;<br \/>\nagenda, but the findings from this year&#8217;s report leave us with an important&#13;<br \/>\nquestion: Why are bribery and corruption threats persisting and still having&#13;<br \/>\nsuch a big impact? <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our survey&#13;<br \/>\nhighlighted that organizations are feeling vulnerable to both internal and&#13;<br \/>\nexternal threats such as poor record keeping and lack of visibility of third&#13;<br \/>\nparties. The human factor is also a key component \u2013 even the best compliance&#13;<br \/>\nprograms can be ineffective if the appropriate education, training, company&#13;<br \/>\nculture and tone from the top aren&#8217;t employed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Survey&#13;<br \/>\nMethodology<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>For the 2021 <i>Global&#13;<br \/>\nFraud and Risk Report<\/i>, Kroll conducted an online survey of 1,336 senior&#13;<br \/>\ndecision-makers for risk strategy, including general counsel, chief compliance&#13;<br \/>\nofficers, chief finance officers and CEOs at corporates. Sixty percent of the&#13;<br \/>\norganisations have annual revenues of $250 million or more, and 34% have annual&#13;<br \/>\nrevenues of more than $1 billion. Survey respondents were drawn from the 17&#13;<br \/>\ncountries and regions featured on the global risk map.
