\ninterest in cloud-native architectures is prompting questions about the future
\nneed for server virtualization in the data center. The most common driver is
\nLinux-OS-based virtualization, which is the basis for containers.1<\/sup>“<\/p>\n

\npower their\u00a0digital transformation strategies. Many of today’s most
\ncutting-edge IoT devices and cloud-based applications and technology run on
\nsome flavor of Linux, making it a critical area of modern technology to secure.<\/p>\n

The report investigates
\nthe top malware families affecting Linux servers during the first half of 2021,
\nwith the top types of malwares being:<\/p>\n
\n- 25% Coinminers\u00a0\u2013
\nThe high prevalence of cryptocurrency miners is of little surprise given the
\nclear motive of the seemingly endless amount of computing power the cloud
\nholds, making it the perfect environment.<\/li>\n - 20% Web shells\u00a0\u2013
\nThe recent Microsoft Exchange Attack, which leveraged web shells, showed the
\nimportance of patching against this type of malware<\/li>\n - 12% Ransomware\u00a0\u2013
\nThe most prevalent detected was the modern ransomware family, DoppelPaymer,
\nhowever some other notable ransomware families seen targeting Linux systems as
\nwell are RansomExx, DarkRadiation, and the DarkSide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n“It’s safe to say
\nthat Linux is here to stay, and as organizations continue to move to
\nLinux-based cloud workloads, malicious actors will follow,” said\u00a0Aaron Ansari<\/span>, vice president of cloud security for Trend
\nMicro. “We have seen this as a main priority to ensure our customers
\nreceive the best security across their workloads, no matter the operating
\nsystem they choose to run it on.”<\/p>\n

The report revealed that
\nmost detections arose from systems running end-of-life versions of Linux
\ndistributions, including 44% from CentOS versions 7.4 to 7.9. In addition, 200
\ndifferent vulnerabilities were targeted in Linux environments in just six
\nmonths. This means attacks on Linux are likely taking advantage of outdated
\nsoftware with unpatched vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n
