According to Gartner\u00ae, &#8220;Rising&#13;<br \/>\ninterest in cloud-native architectures is prompting questions about the future&#13;<br \/>\nneed for server virtualization in the data center. The most common driver is&#13;<br \/>\nLinux-OS-based virtualization, which is the basis for containers.<sup>1<\/sup>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Linux allows&#13;<br \/>\norganizations to make the most of their\u00a0cloud-based environments\u00a0and&#13;<br \/>\npower their\u00a0digital transformation strategies. Many of today&#8217;s most&#13;<br \/>\ncutting-edge IoT devices and cloud-based applications and technology run on&#13;<br \/>\nsome flavor of Linux, making it a critical area of modern technology to secure.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the industry,&#13;<br \/>\nwe see some very creative attacks and we have to stay ahead. Protecting the&#13;<br \/>\ncompany, our employees, and our intellectual property is a priority,&#8221;&#13;<br \/>\nsays\u00a0<span class=\"xn person\">John Breen<\/span>, Global Head of Cybersecurity&#13;<br \/>\nat Flowserve. &#8220;We&#8217;ll continue to work closely and collaborate with Trend&#13;<br \/>\nMicro to ensure our people and our company remain protected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>The report investigates&#13;<br \/>\nthe top malware families affecting Linux servers during the first half of 2021,&#13;<br \/>\nwith the top types of malwares being:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>25% Coinminers\u00a0\u2013&#13;<br \/>\nThe high prevalence of cryptocurrency miners is of little surprise given the&#13;<br \/>\nclear motive of the seemingly endless amount of computing power the cloud&#13;<br \/>\nholds, making it the perfect environment.<\/li>\n<li>20% Web shells\u00a0\u2013&#13;<br \/>\nThe recent Microsoft Exchange Attack, which leveraged web shells, showed the&#13;<br \/>\nimportance of patching against this type of malware<\/li>\n<li>12% Ransomware\u00a0\u2013&#13;<br \/>\nThe most prevalent detected was the modern ransomware family, DoppelPaymer,&#13;<br \/>\nhowever some other notable ransomware families seen targeting Linux systems as&#13;<br \/>\nwell are RansomExx, DarkRadiation, and the DarkSide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s safe to say&#13;<br \/>\nthat Linux is here to stay, and as organizations continue to move to&#13;<br \/>\nLinux-based cloud workloads, malicious actors will follow,&#8221; said\u00a0<span class=\"xn person\">Aaron Ansari<\/span>, vice president of cloud security for Trend&#13;<br \/>\nMicro. &#8220;We have seen this as a main priority to ensure our customers&#13;<br \/>\nreceive the best security across their workloads, no matter the operating&#13;<br \/>\nsystem they choose to run it on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>The report revealed that&#13;<br \/>\nmost detections arose from systems running end-of-life versions of Linux&#13;<br \/>\ndistributions, including 44% from CentOS versions 7.4 to 7.9. In addition, 200&#13;<br \/>\ndifferent vulnerabilities were targeted in Linux environments in just six&#13;<br \/>\nmonths.
