This&#13;<br \/>\nbuilds on the previous spike in overseas spending recorded by the company in&#13;<br \/>\nthe first half of 2020, reflecting a greater appetite for goods from foreign&#13;<br \/>\nretailers by locals in this time of disrupted travel. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Cross-border spending makes up a key component of&#13;<br \/>\nSingapore&#8217;s thriving e-commerce market, which is poised to reach US$8 billion&#13;<br \/>\nin 2025<a name=\"_ftnref2\" title=\"\"><sup><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>. The&#13;<br \/>\ncontinued closure of borders has also encouraged the frequency of transactions&#13;<br \/>\nfrom overseas retail sites. A separate YouTrip survey showed that three in five&#13;<br \/>\nlocal consumers purchased from overseas shopping sites at least once a month,&#13;<br \/>\nand half spent an average of $51 &#8211; $150 per transaction<a name=\"_ftnref3\" title=\"\"><sup><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p><b>International marketplaces key&#13;<br \/>\ndrivers of overseas spending\u00a0 <\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Global&#13;<br \/>\nmarketplaces continue to be hugely popular among local consumers, with key&#13;<br \/>\nplayers from China and the US driving most of the overseas spending from&#13;<br \/>\nSingaporeans.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>According to YouTrip&#8217;s data, international marketplaces &#8211; <b>Taobao<\/b> (#1), <b>Amazon<\/b> (#2), <b>Alibaba.com<\/b>&#13;<br \/>\n(#3) and <b>eBay<\/b> (#5) &#8211; dominated the list of top 10 overseas websites\u00a0frequented by Singaporeans in the&#13;<br \/>\npast 12 months.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Singaporeans were also not&#13;<br \/>\nshy about increasing their spending with these online retailers. Transactions&#13;<br \/>\nmore than doubled on Taobao (131%) and Alibaba.com (120%) from the year before,&#13;<br \/>\nand consumers ramped up purchases on eBay, resulting in a 98% increase.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>In terms of spending habits, peak transactions were&#13;<br \/>\nregistered in the mid and end of the calendar year, specifically in the months&#13;<br \/>\nof June, November and December. These are in line with mega sale events&#13;<br \/>\nlaunched by overseas marketplaces during that period, such as the 618 Taobao&#13;<br \/>\nFestival and Amazon Prime Day in June 2021, as well as the 11.11 Singles&#8217; Day,&#13;<br \/>\n12.12 Shopping Madness, Cyber Monday and Black Friday sales in time for the&#13;<br \/>\nend-of-year shopping season. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p><b>Crossing borders to meet more of&#13;<br \/>\ntheir everyday needs\u00a0 <\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Clothing apparel and footwear emerged as the top&#13;<br \/>\ncategory<a name=\"_ftnref4\" title=\"\"><sup><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a> for&#13;<br \/>\noverseas shopping among Singaporeans. Consumer electronics as well as furniture&#13;<br \/>\nand household items followed behind, as locals integrated this work-from-home&#13;<br \/>\nnormal into their daily lives.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Beyond these popular categories, the company&#8217;s latest&#13;<br \/>\ndata also showed that Singaporeans were becoming more health-conscious during&#13;<br \/>\nthe pandemic, turning to trusted overseas retailers for products to boost their&#13;<br \/>\noverall well-being.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Health supplement retailers &#8211; <b>iHerb<\/b> (#4) from the US and Australia&#8217;s <b>Chemist Warehouse<\/b> (#10) &#8211; were two credible\u00a0 sites that Singaporeans frequented to get&#13;<br \/>\ntheir dose of nutrition, whereas <b>Lululemon&#13;<br \/>\nHK<\/b> (#8) was the go-to overseas brand for their choice of activewear.<\/li>\n<li>Singaporeans have also turned up the gears on their cycling&#13;<br \/>\ngame in the past year. Cycling-related transactions more than doubled in the&#13;<br \/>\nlast 12 months, and cycling enthusiasts were visiting leading specialist bike&#13;<br \/>\nshops &#8211; such as <b>Evans Cycles<\/b> (#9)&#13;<br \/>\nfrom the UK &#8211; to pick up their own bike and cycling accessories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\nfitness, overseas retailers also provided a source of solace for Kpop&#13;<br \/>\nfans in a time when live concerts are halted. Transactions on <b>Weverse Shop (#6) <\/b>&#8211; the global merchandise&#13;<br \/>\nstore for top idols such as BTS and GFRIEND &#8211; saw a staggering triple in&#13;<br \/>\ngrowth, as legions of local fans spare no expense to purchase merchandise that&#13;<br \/>\nwill bring them closer to their favourite pop stars.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p><b>Price is king&#13;<br \/>\nfor consumers <\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>When asked about the reasons&#13;<br \/>\nfor purchasing from overseas retailers, around eight in 10 respondents<a name=\"_ftnref5\" title=\"\"><sup><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a> indicated&#13;<br \/>\nthe lower cost of items on foreign sites as the key drawcard. This was followed&#13;<br \/>\nby a wider variety\u00a0 of products offered&#13;<br \/>\nby international brands, and the lack of availability from local retailers&#13;<br \/>\npushing consumers to approach overseas alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Singaporeans are becoming&#13;<br \/>\nseasoned shoppers of marketplaces and brands from around the world. We&#8217;re&#13;<br \/>\nexpecting this overseas spending behaviour to persist when travel resumes, as&#13;<br \/>\nechoed by nine in 10 of our users<a name=\"_ftnref6\" title=\"\"><sup><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a> who have&#13;<br \/>\nindicated their preference to continue shopping from foreign retailers after&#13;<br \/>\nborders reopen.
