Their winning solution &#8220;EGames Truck&#8221;,&#13;<br \/>\na mobile entertainment center featuring different educational and entertaining&#13;<br \/>\ngames, aims at tackling the mental health issues of the increasing population&#13;<br \/>\nof elderly citizens living in remote areas in the North District by regularly bringing&#13;<br \/>\neducational and entertaining games to their doorsteps. The winning team will join a Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS)-organized tour to Bali&#13;<br \/>\nnext year to visit a&#13;<br \/>\ncluster of innovative&#13;<br \/>\nstart-ups and social enterprises.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Supported by Citi Foundation and organized by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service,&#13;<br \/>\nthe &#8220;Social Innovation * Community 4.0&#8221; Competition is a pioneering challenge open to all secondary schools to&#13;<br \/>\nfind sustainable solutions to community problems. Mr. Ivan Lee Kwok Bun, JP, Hong Kong&#8217;s Commissioner for Efficiency, Innovation and Technology Bureau; Mr. Wayne Fong, Head of Corporate Affairs, Citi Hong Kong; and Mr. Chua Hoi&#13;<br \/>\nWai, Chief Executive, HKCSS and Miss Gloria Lam Tsz Yan, Assistant District Officer, North District&#13;<br \/>\nOffice, Home Affairs&#13;<br \/>\nDepartment, officiated at the award presentation ceremony today. Also attending&#13;<br \/>\nwere representatives of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation&#13;<br \/>\n(HKSTP), competition&#8217;s partnering and supporting organizations, as well as teachers&#13;<br \/>\nand students from the finalist teams. \u00a0Five&#13;<br \/>\naward prototypes were&#13;<br \/>\nshowcased at the ceremony. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Each year a district in Hong Kong is selected as the focal area \u2013 Central&#13;<br \/>\nand Western District in its first year,&#13;<br \/>\nKowloon&#13;<br \/>\nCity District was next, then this&#13;<br \/>\nyear North District&#13;<br \/>\nwas the focus. Through experiential learning in the community and comprehensive&#13;<br \/>\ntraining in design thinking, technology, and making prototypes, as well as&#13;<br \/>\ninteraction with local citizens with the support of the District Office and NGOs in the area,&#13;<br \/>\nparticipating students are challenged to identify a community issue and&#13;<br \/>\ncome up with solutions to address it. This year, 45 teams from 28 secondary schools&#13;<br \/>\nsubmitted their proposals. 15 finalist&#13;<br \/>\nteams were invited to produce prototypes,&#13;<br \/>\nwhich, together with remaining teams&#8217; concept&#13;<br \/>\nboards,&#13;<br \/>\nare now being exhibited to the public at North District Town Hall until July 18.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ivan Lee Kwok Bun, JP, Hong Kong&#8217;s Commissioner for Efficiency, Innovation and Technology Bureau called upon members of different sectors to model on this competition&#13;<br \/>\nand join hands to drive social innovation, &#8220;I look forward to seeing more&#13;<br \/>\norganizations and bodies engage in such cross-sector collaboration to foster&#13;<br \/>\nyouth participation in social innovation and devise related programs and&#13;<br \/>\nprojects that bring impact to society.&#8221;\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\nHe also encouraged students to continue to care about society, &#8220;In this&#13;<br \/>\ncompetition you have demonstrated your creativity, affection, empathy, as well&#13;<br \/>\nas commitment to society. At a time when our society is facing different&#13;<br \/>\nchallenges, I truly hope you will keep caring about the community and other&#13;<br \/>\npeople and get yourselves well equipped to contribute to building our splendid home&#13;<br \/>\nwith your positive energy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Mr. Wayne Fong, Head of Corporate Affairs, Citi Hong Kong, said, &#8220;Young&#13;<br \/>\nminds are key to shaping a brighter future for all, and Citi Foundation aspires&#13;<br \/>\nto equip them with the skills and networks which will contribute to their&#13;<br \/>\nsuccess in our ever-changing world. This competition is an example of Citi&#8217;s&#13;<br \/>\ncommitment to sustainability and we are pleased to see our vision to advance&#13;<br \/>\nyouth empowerment for the holistic and inclusive growth of the community come&#13;<br \/>\nto fruition.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Mr. Chua Hoi Wai, Chief Executive of HKCSS, said, &#8220;I am so happy to see that students are able&#13;<br \/>\nto walk through their journey of design thinking and produce innovative&#13;<br \/>\nsolutions to address the community needs of North District with empathy. With&#13;<br \/>\nthe extensive support of concerned government departments, community partners,&#13;<br \/>\nvillage groups and expert groups, the competition provided a series of&#13;<br \/>\ncommunity visits, community pitching, technological and technical support to&#13;<br \/>\nstudents. It is hoped that the &#8216;Social Innovation * Community&#13;<br \/>\n4.0&#8217; Competition is not only a student competition, but also an action-oriented&#13;<br \/>\nexperience that delivers real community solutions and puts social innovation into practice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>The finalists&#8217; prototypes will undergo four rounds of testing in the&#13;<br \/>\ncommunity on July 19 and 22 this&#13;<br \/>\nyear. Teams will demonstrate on-site how their prototypes operate in practice,&#13;<br \/>\nwhile residents&#13;<br \/>\nin North District will be invited to provide user feedback in order to improve the feasibility and practicality&#13;<br \/>\nthe prototypes. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>The fourth &#8220;Social Innovation *&#13;<br \/>\nCommunity 4.0&#8221; Competition will be open for applications in mid-October, and&#13;<br \/>\nthe new cohort will focus on social issues in Sham Shui Po District.
