{"id":16242,"date":"2021-07-13T09:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-13T09:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eodishasamachar.com\/en\/2021\/07\/13\/hong-kong-baptist-university-secures-funding-from-rgc-theme-based-research-scheme-to-build-platform-technologies-for-symbiotic-creativity\/"},"modified":"2021-07-13T09:30:00","modified_gmt":"2021-07-13T09:30:00","slug":"hong-kong-baptist-university-secures-funding-from-rgc-theme-based-research-scheme-to-build-platform-technologies-for-symbiotic-creativity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eodishasamachar.com\/en\/2021\/07\/13\/hong-kong-baptist-university-secures-funding-from-rgc-theme-based-research-scheme-to-build-platform-technologies-for-symbiotic-creativity\/","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong Baptist University secures funding from RGC Theme-based Research Scheme to build platform technologies for symbiotic creativity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\"><!--<a class=\"format-txt\" href=\"{baseURL}\/View\/{release.id}?_download=1\">View this article in .txt format<\/a>--><\/p>\n<p>HONG&#13;<br \/>\nKONG SAR &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.media-outreach.com\/\">Media OutReach<\/a> &#8211; 13 July&#13;<br \/>\n2021 &#8211; A research project led by Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) entitled&#13;<br \/>\n&#8220;Building Platform Technologies for Symbiotic Creativity in Hong Kong&#8221; has been&#13;<br \/>\nawarded HK$52.8 million in research funding from the Theme-based Research&#13;<br \/>\nScheme (11th round) under the Research Grants Council (RGC) for a five-year project.&#13;<br \/>\nThis is the first time that major funding has been allocated by the RGC for an art-tech&#13;<br \/>\nproject.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img src=\"https:\/\/release.media-outreach.com\/release.php\/Images\/Thumb\/500x0\/162512\/20210713.jpg#image-162512\" width=\"500\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\">The research team led by Professor Guo&#13;<br \/>\nYike, Vice-President (Research and Development) (right) and Professor Johnny M&#13;<br \/>\nPoon, Associate Vice-President (Interdisciplinary Research) at HKBU has been&#13;<br \/>\nawarded HK$52.8 million in research funding from RGC to develop platform&#13;<br \/>\ntechnologies for symbiotic creativity.<\/h5>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>The&#13;<br \/>\nresearch team will develop platform technologies for symbiotic creativity,&#13;<br \/>\nproviding unlimited art content for humans, including an art data repository,&#13;<br \/>\nan artificial intelligence (AI) creative algorithm system, a research theatre,&#13;<br \/>\na digital&#13;<br \/>\nart and policy network, and some unique and creative application projects, to usher in&#13;<br \/>\na new era of art technology.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Led by&#13;<br \/>\nProfessor Guo Yike, Vice-President (Research and Development), and Professor&#13;<br \/>\nJohnny M Poon, Associate Vice-President (Interdisciplinary Research), at HKBU,&#13;<br \/>\nthe research team will develop an immersive and interactive extended reality (XR)&#13;<br \/>\nplatform to capture human data during the artistic creation and appreciation&#13;<br \/>\nprocess, which includes the cognitive and physiological data of artists and the&#13;<br \/>\naudience, such as brain waves, body temperature and heart rates, gait and&#13;<br \/>\nmovements, etc. The platform will then convert the data into the descriptors of&#13;<br \/>\ncognition, emotions, and behavioural patterns.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>The&#13;<br \/>\nresearchers will associate and link the artworks with the descriptors to build a&#13;<br \/>\ncomprehensive and extensive data repository for artificial intelligence model&#13;<br \/>\ntraining. It will enable machines to learn human aesthetics, instead of&#13;<br \/>\nmimicking art created by humans.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>The&#13;<br \/>\nplatform will also enable the audience to immerse themselves in a virtual world.&#13;<br \/>\nThey will be surrounded by images, sounds, etc, and have new artistic experiences.&#13;<br \/>\nIn addition, the immersive and interactive XR platform will be equipped with a&#13;<br \/>\nnumber of sensing devices, which will help the artists to go beyond the traditional&#13;<br \/>\nforms and boundaries and communicate and interact with the audience in new&#13;<br \/>\nways.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This research project has secured&#13;<br \/>\nfunding from the RGC, demonstrating that Hong Kong attaches great importance to&#13;<br \/>\nthe development of artistic and creative technologies based on AI. This project&#13;<br \/>\nstands at&#13;<br \/>\nthe forefront of the arts and science nexus, harnessing the power of science&#13;<br \/>\nand technology to advance human and AI interaction in art creation. It will&#13;<br \/>\nfoster a new direction in art created by both humans and machines,&#8221; said&#13;<br \/>\nProfessor Guo.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will&#13;<br \/>\nspare no effort in building a world-class AI art creation platform, and it will&#13;<br \/>\ndrive a new revolution that transforms the creative and cultural industries. It&#13;<br \/>\nwill enable Hong Kong to assume a leading position in art-tech on the global&#13;<br \/>\nstage,&#8221; he added. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Under this&#13;<br \/>\nproject, HKBU will launch three application projects: the Super AI artist \u2013 the&#13;<br \/>\nworld&#8217;s first &#8220;Combined Music and Art Biennale&#8221;, which will host&#13;<br \/>\nmultidisciplinary musical works and artworks jointly created by humans and AI; Shared&#13;<br \/>\nMind and Empathetic AI \u2013 a concert series featuring a three-way collaboration&#13;<br \/>\nbetween performers, the audience and machines; and Symbiotic Opera \u2013 a new form&#13;<br \/>\nof opera that integrates with immersive XR technology, and it will be jointly created&#13;<br \/>\nby humans and machines in an immersive virtual world.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Members&#13;<br \/>\nof the multidisciplinary research team led by HKBU include cognitive&#13;<br \/>\nscientists, AI and data scientists, media scientists, ethicists and art policy&#13;<br \/>\nscholars from Yale University, the University of Cambridge, Imperial College&#13;<br \/>\nLondon, the University of Kent, Tsinghua University, the University of Hong&#13;<br \/>\nKong and City University of Hong Kong.
