Some studies&#13;<br \/>\nhave shown that women experience more serious constipation problems than men <sup>(Note&#13;<br \/>\n2).<\/sup><sdt sdttag=\"goog_rdk_0\" id=\"2126886181\"><b>The Hong Kong&#13;<br \/>\n Consortium for Medical, Nursing and Healthcare Development (&#8220;MNHD&#8221;) (<\/b><b>\u9999\u6e2f\u91ab\u7642\u8b77\u7406\u767c\u5c55\u5354\u6703)<\/b><\/sdt>&#13;<br \/>\nand the <sdt sdttag=\"goog_rdk_1\" id=\"-1407219139\"><b>Hong Kong Society of&#13;<br \/>\n Gastrointestinal Motility Limited (&#8220;HKSGM&#8221;) (<\/b><b>\u9999\u6e2f\u8178\u80c3\u52d5\u529b\u5b78\u6703)<\/b><\/sdt>&#13;<br \/>\ncommissioned the Medical Research and PR consulting company, the<b> <sdt sdttag=\"goog_rdk_2\" id=\"-1253196700\">Hong Kong Healthcare Market Research and&#13;<br \/>\n Consulting Ltd. (&#8220;HKHMR&#8221;) (\u9999\u6e2f\u91ab\u8b77\u5e02\u5834\u8abf\u67e5\u53ca\u7b56\u5283)<\/sdt><\/b>&#13;<br \/>\nto conduct a questionnaire survey intended to understand changes in working&#13;<br \/>\nwomen&#8217;s defecation habits during the pandemic and focus on women&#8217;s constipation problems.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In order to&#13;<br \/>\ngain an insight into changes in working women&#8217;s defecation habits compared to&#13;<br \/>\nbefore the pandemic, HKHMR\u00a0dispatched&#13;<br \/>\ninvestigators to distribute 209 questionnaire copies in 81 enterprises from&#13;<br \/>\nApril to May, 2021. <b>181 <\/b>effective&#13;<br \/>\nquestionnaires were successfully collected.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">According to&#13;<br \/>\nthe results of questionnaire surveys conducted in Hong Kong <sup>(Note 4)<\/sup>,&#13;<br \/>\ncompared to before the COVID-19 outbreak, <b>22.1%<\/b>&#13;<br \/>\nof the respondents experienced <b>a&#13;<br \/>\ndecrease in defecation frequency<\/b>. Among them, <b>more than 50% (52.5%)<\/b> experienced <b>a decrease of three times or more a week<\/b>. In terms of the number of&#13;<br \/>\ntimes, <b>more than 30% (30.9%) of the&#13;<br \/>\npeople experienced longer average defecation time in the toilet than before the&#13;<br \/>\npandemic<\/b>. The survey also showed that <b>12.2%<\/b>&#13;<br \/>\nof the respondents experienced <b>symptoms&#13;<br \/>\nof constipation<\/b> <sup>(Note 4)<\/sup>. At the same time, the ratio was higher&#13;<br \/>\nfor respondents <b>with children<\/b>&#13;<br \/>\ncompared to that of respondents <b>with no&#13;<br \/>\nchildren<\/b>, accounting for <b>15% (14.7%)<\/b>&#13;<br \/>\nand <b>10% (10.6%)<\/b> respectively. As for&#13;<br \/>\nthe daily habits of the respondents, <b>61.9%<\/b>&#13;<br \/>\nof the working female respondents <b>worked&#13;<br \/>\n46 hours or longer per week<\/b>. Compared to before the pandemic, about <b>70% (65.2%)<\/b> of the respondents disagree&#13;<br \/>\nwith <b>&#8220;shortened working time&#8221;<\/b>, <b>85.1%<\/b> believe their<b> stress increased<\/b>, and <b>82.3%<\/b>&#13;<br \/>\nbelieve their <b>exercise time decreased<\/b>.&#13;<br \/>\nAccording to director, Wong Mong-Shuen of the HKHMR, &#8220;The figures reflect major&#13;<br \/>\nimpacts on working women&#8217;s defecation time and their significantly increased&#13;<br \/>\nstress.&#8221; This indicates that their defecation habits may be associated with&#13;<br \/>\nchanges in defecation. Among women with constipation, the ratio is higher in&#13;<br \/>\nwomen with children than women without children. The survey shows Swomen with&#13;<br \/>\ntwo jobs have a more serious constipation problem, which should be taken&#13;<br \/>\nseriously.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><b>Constipation is manifested by granular or sausage-like&#13;<br \/>\nfeces, which is mainly caused by improper daily habits.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">According to&#13;<br \/>\n<sdt sdttag=\"goog_rdk_3\" id=\"-1483073799\"><b>Gastroenterology&#13;<br \/>\n specialist, Dr. Chau Tai Nin (\u5468\u6cf0\u5e74), the consultant of&#13;<br \/>\n MNHD<\/b><\/sdt>, &#8220;Everyone can conduct an initial&#13;<br \/>\nconstipation evaluation through a self-assessment questionnaire <sup>(Note 5)<\/sup>.&#13;<br \/>\nGenerally speaking, <b>defecating three&#13;<br \/>\ntimes daily to three times a week and within five minutes<\/b> each time is&#13;<br \/>\nconsidered normal <sup>(Note 6)<\/sup>. In addition, everyone can observe their&#13;<br \/>\nfeces according to &#8220;Bristol stool scale&#8221; and gain an insight into the degree of&#13;<br \/>\nconstipation&#8221;. Constipation <sup>(Note 1)<\/sup> refers to diminished muscle&#13;<br \/>\ncontraction function of the colon, which causes a slowdown in the peristalsis&#13;<br \/>\nof feces in the colon and retention in the intestines. In time, the moisture in&#13;<br \/>\nthe stool is absorbed by the colon, the feces harden, and discharge becomes&#13;<br \/>\ndifficult. Dr. Chau pointed out that &#8220;<b>Improper&#13;<br \/>\ndaily habits mostly cause constipation problems in adults<\/b>, especially <b>stress<\/b> that cannot be ignored. Lack of&#13;<br \/>\nexercise, insufficient dietary fiber and water intake, and frequently holding&#13;<br \/>\nback the desire to defecate all may result in constipation. Additionally, drug&#13;<br \/>\nadministration and disease may also cause constipation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">According to&#13;<br \/>\na survey on pandemic prevention and control measures and constipation conducted&#13;<br \/>\nin Mexico, <b>25%<\/b> of respondents&#13;<br \/>\nexercise less due to community lockdowns and activity restriction measures,&#13;<br \/>\nleading to the emergence of constipation-related symptoms <sup>(Note 7)<\/sup>.&#13;<br \/>\nDr. Chau said, &#8220;This finding coincides with the current survey results.&#13;<br \/>\nEveryone with a constipation problem should take it seriously and consult a&#13;<br \/>\ndoctor. Medical diagnoses such as colonoscopies, rectal x-rays during&#13;<br \/>\ndefecation, hematological tests, anorectal tests, and so on, will aid in&#13;<br \/>\nderiving a confirmed diagnosis of constipation and in determining the severity&#13;<br \/>\nto take the correct actions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><b>Hormone-driven women are prone to more serious constipation.&#13;<br \/>\nAllot time for &#8220;drinking water&#8221; during work. <\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">According to&#13;<br \/>\n<b>gastroenterology specialist, Dr. <\/b><b>Sze Wan Chee&#13;<br \/>\n(<\/b><b>\u65bd\u860a\u77e5<\/b><b>)<\/b><b>, the honorary secretary of HKSGM<\/b>,&#13;<br \/>\n&#8220;<b>Women are more prone to constipation&#13;<br \/>\nthan men<\/b> <sup>(Note 8)<\/sup>. This is because female hormones are more&#13;<br \/>\nlikely to affect peristalsis than male hormones. Menstruating or pregnant women&#13;<br \/>\nare more likely to experience constipation&#8221;. Dr. Sze suggests that women find&#13;<br \/>\ntime to drink water and go to the toilet, such as <b>drinking water every hour, going to the toilet every three hours<\/b>,&#13;<br \/>\nor <b>dividing their work into several&#13;<br \/>\nstages to drink water after completing each stage<\/b>&#8220;. At the same time, Dr.&#13;<br \/>\nSze also advises everyone to <b>move around&#13;<br \/>\nregularly to avoid sitting for prolonged periods<\/b>. When everyone is unable&#13;<br \/>\nto exercise outdoors, everyone can spread a yoga mat and perform simple&#13;<br \/>\nstretching and muscle exercises daily to release life stress and move the limbs&#13;<br \/>\nfrom time to time. In addition, women can also <b>slightly elevate their legs in the toilet to facilitate defecation<\/b> <sup>(Note&#13;<br \/>\n6)<\/sup>. Of course, it is also necessary to <b>consume high-fiber foods<\/b>, such as oats and legumes. <sup>Table 1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><b>PEG and psyllium alleviate constipation. People aged over 50&#13;<br \/>\nwith constipation problems should seek medical attention immediately.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">If the&#13;<br \/>\nconstipation problem fails to be solved even after improvement on daily habits,&#13;<br \/>\nconsult a doctor to see if medication is needed for handling constipation.&#13;<br \/>\nFirst-line pharmaceuticals such as <b>PEG&#13;<br \/>\nwithout electrolytes<\/b>, methylcellulose, and psyllium can increase defecation&#13;<br \/>\nfrequency and alleviate abdominal pain. PEG, in particular, is less likely to&#13;<br \/>\ncause bloating, flatulence, and other side effects <sup>(Note 6)<\/sup>. Dr. Sze&#13;<br \/>\nrecommends that &#8220;People aged over 50 who experience constipation should seek&#13;<br \/>\nmedical attention as soon as possible or join the <b>&#8220;Colorectal Cancer Screening Program&#8221;<\/b> funded by the government to&#13;<br \/>\ndetermine if they have colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><b>Women with two jobs are confronted by &#8220;triple pressure&#8221;.&#13;<br \/>\nAdvocate the promotion of flexible work assignments by employers.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">According to&#13;<br \/>\n<b>Professor <\/b><b>Wong Kwok&#13;<br \/>\nShing (<\/b><b>\u6c6a\u570b\u6210\u6559\u6388<\/b><b>)<\/b>,&#13;<br \/>\nconcurrently the <b>Chairman of MNHD<\/b>&#13;<br \/>\nand the Dean of Hong Kong Nang Yan College of Higher Education School of&#13;<br \/>\nNursing and Health Care (\u9999\u6e2f\u80fd\u4ec1\u5c08\u4e0a\u5b78\u9662\u91ab\u7642\u53ca\u8b77\u7406\u5b78\u9662), &#8220;During&#13;<br \/>\nthe pandemic, many working women have resorted to a home office, thus the&#13;<br \/>\nreduced mobility. Some face salary, work, and manpower reduction, resulting in&#13;<br \/>\nincreased working hours and other issues. Let us not forget that the husbands&#13;<br \/>\nof these working women are also currently working and facing double pressure.&#13;<br \/>\nThe many classes suspension earlier have compelled women with schooling&#13;<br \/>\nchildren to accompany their children throughout visualized learning at home,&#13;<br \/>\nwhich is a triple pressure.&#8221; Ms. Yu working in an insurance company and with&#13;<br \/>\nthree children, has had constipation for three years. She shared, &#8220;I defecate&#13;<br \/>\nabout once every other day. My feces are hard. I have tried eating fruit and&#13;<br \/>\ndrinking plenty of water, but they don&#8217;t seem to work, as constipation may be&#13;<br \/>\nstress-induced. Although my work is more flexible, I need to accompany my&#13;<br \/>\nchildren learning from an iPad while working during the pandemic. I am under&#13;<br \/>\ntremendous pressure&#8221;. It is hoped that the general public and employers be more&#13;<br \/>\nconsiderate of working women&#8217;s stress and encourage them to work at home or&#13;<br \/>\nhave a flexible work schedule.
