\nJuly 2021 – In preparation for the new school year which begins in July,
\nTanoto Foundation trained more than 800 facilitators to enhance the
\ncapabilities of school teachers and principals in accelerating the
\nimplementation of blended learning and mitigating learning loss in students. The
\ncourse equips educators with the necessary knowledge and skills in conducting
\nlimited in-person lessons as well as online lessons.<\/p>\n

The independent philanthropy organization, founded by
\nSukanto Tantoto and Tinah Bingei Tanoto in 1981, is focused in empowering
\nschools and madrasas to mitigate learning loss due to long-term distance
\nlearning. Its basic education program PINTAR drives initiatives to accelerate
\nthe achievement of these learning outcomes.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
Tanoto Foundation’s PINTAR Program Director M Ari Widowati explained
\nthat facilitators across 25 partner districts and towns underwent a four-day
\ncourse on synchronous and asynchronous learning. Participants were trained to
\nidentify student learning dispositions and appropriately apply differentiated learning
\nplans. This approach is expected to further motivate students and improve
\nlearning outcomes. <\/p>\n

Selected facilitators from the course will train principals
\nand teachers from 843 partner schools and madrasas across five provinces \u2013
\nNorth Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, Central Java and East Kalimantan. <\/p>\n

\n
<\/p>\n
Adapted from a guide released by the Ministry of Education,
\nCulture, Research and Technology, the course comprises training modules for
\nboth principals and teachers. The modules for principals cover school
\npreparedness and adaptive pedagogical approaches in pandemic conditions, as
\nwell as implementation of the blended learning approach.<\/p>\n

\n
<\/p>\n
Ms. Ari further explained: “Both principals and teachers are
\nsimultaneously trained because they hold significant and inseparable roles in
\ndelivering a good education outcomes. Teachers prepare learning materials for
\nstudents, while principals ensure teachers are adequately supported with
\nresources and aids.”<\/p>\n

PINTAR Program’s Training Head Golda Simatupang said
\nprincipals who participate in the training will be better prepared for limited
\nin-person learning. Ms. Golda explained: “The training covers in fulfilling administrative
\nrequirements, providing the needed facilities and infrastructure, developing
\nlearning strategies and arrangements, as well as having a monitoring and evaluation
\nprocedure to ensure that limited in-person learning can be carried out safely
\nand effectively in schools.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
“<\/b>Principals are also trained in better managing
\nteachers and staff for the implementation of blended learning. They learn to
\ndevelop lesson plans that accommodate blended learning. They also learn to
\nbetter support their staff and conduct blending learning simulations to fine-tune
\ntheir curriculum planning,” said Ms. Golda.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
The teacher training module comprises two units: A diagnostic
\nassessment and the development of differentiated learning plans. This will
\nenable teachers to more competently assess students with regard to the
\nindividual student’s learning loss, so that differentiated learning plans can
\nbe designed and implemented for each student.<\/p>\n
\n

Supardi, Principal of SMPN 2 Kendal state junior high school
\nin Central Java, said that the training is urgently needed as new school year
\ncommenced. He said, “The training will help us immensely in providing both
\nlimited in-person and online learning. We will also be able to identify the
\nlearning requirements suited to each student’s needs and bridge any learning
\ngaps.”<\/p>\n
