Radio Unit (RU) architecture<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Network&#13;<br \/>\nmodernisation gains traction as Axiata positions for network leadership across&#13;<br \/>\nits footprint, with the commercial deployment of 2G and 4G single RAN Open RAN&#13;<br \/>\nmatching the performance of incumbents in brown field environment.<\/li>\n<li>Key&#13;<br \/>\nstrategic partnerships formed with world-class network solutions providers,&#13;<br \/>\nMavenir, Parallel Wireless and global IT giant Infosys lead to successful Open RAN&#13;<br \/>\ncommercial pilots in Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Default\">KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.media-outreach.com\/\">Media OutReach<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; 28 June 2021 &#8211;<b>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/b>Axiata&#13;<br \/>\nGroup Berhad (&#8220;Axiata&#8221; or &#8220;the Group&#8221;) has embarked on an ambitious&#13;<br \/>\nnetwork transformation program, leveraging Open Radio Access Networks (Open&#13;<br \/>\nRAN) as a key technology for\u00a0 mobile&#13;<br \/>\nnetworks designed to narrow the digital divide and enhance rural connectivity&#13;<br \/>\nacross Asia. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Eyeing large&#13;<br \/>\nscale commercial deployments by year end, the Group has successfully conducted Open&#13;<br \/>\nRAN commercial field pilots in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka through&#13;<br \/>\nstrategic partnerships with leading global network solutions providers Mavenir&#13;<br \/>\nand Parallel Wireless and supported by Infosys as systems integrator (SI). <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Through&#13;<br \/>\nits strategic partnership with Mavenir, the industry&#8217;s end to end network&#13;<br \/>\nsoftware provider, Axiata has deployed the MAVair Open vRAN solution including&#13;<br \/>\nall G Open RAN, Packet Core and Mobile Network applications at selected sites, in&#13;<br \/>\nMalaysia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. To simulate non-ideal backhaul conditions,&#13;<br \/>\nespecially for rural areas, the sites selected are connected with non-ideal&#13;<br \/>\nbackhaul (microwave links), and in some cases satellite, making this the first satellite&#13;<br \/>\nbackhaul powered Open vRAN sites in the world.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">During&#13;<br \/>\nthe testing phase, Axiata was also able to achieve the first live commercial&#13;<br \/>\nservice integration of the Telecom Infra Project (TIP)&#8217;s Evenstar 4G Radio&#13;<br \/>\nthrough Mavenir&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/mavenir.com\/portfolio\/access-edge-solutions\/\">MAVair<\/a> O-RAN&#13;<br \/>\nbased solution for Open RAN. Axiata is a participant&#13;<br \/>\nof the TIP initiative in which a global community of companies and&#13;<br \/>\norganisations are working together to accelerate the development and deployment&#13;<br \/>\nof open, disaggregated and standards-based technology solutions that deliver&#13;<br \/>\nhigh quality, low cost connectivity. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Axiata&#8217;s&#13;<br \/>\ncommercial pilot also encompassed a collaboration with Parallel Wireless, the&#13;<br \/>\nUS-based Open RAN company delivering all G, cloud-native Open RAN solutions. Axiata&#13;<br \/>\nsuccessfully demonstrated commercial deployment of 2G and 4G Open RAN&#13;<br \/>\nconnectivity within its network in Sri Lanka which is operated by Dialog&#13;<br \/>\nAxiata. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">Parallel Wireless&#8217;s solutions enabled 2G and 4G technology to&#13;<br \/>\nbe installed on the same radio units, with baseband deployed on a x86&#13;<br \/>\ncommercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) platform, and all other applications deployed on&#13;<br \/>\nAxiata&#8217;s OpenStack cloud infrastructure. The field trials now elevated to&#13;<br \/>\ncommercial availability, included 3-Sector, 4-Sector and 6-Sector sites, and&#13;<br \/>\ndemonstrated high quality network performance. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">End&#13;<br \/>\nuser experience was demonstrated to be seamless and, in some cases, superior in&#13;<br \/>\nterms of mobile broadband experience including next generation voice services.&#13;<br \/>\nCommercial deployment encompassed rural, sub-urban and urban environments.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">The paradigm shift in telco networks towards Open RAN&#13;<br \/>\nrequires system integration capabilities to bring together the ecosystem of&#13;<br \/>\ndisaggregated components using standardised open interfaces on general purpose&#13;<br \/>\nhardware and ensuring interoperability in a carrier grade environment. Axiata&#13;<br \/>\nwas supported by Infosys in executing multi-faceted system integrations&#13;<br \/>\nrequired to demonstrate the comprehensive coverage of Open RAN configuration&#13;<br \/>\noptions. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><b>Thomas Hundt, Axiata&#8217;s Group Executive Vice President \u2013 Technology<\/b> said, &#8220;Open RAN is the future for mobile networks,&#13;<br \/>\nand it will be critical for 4G expansions as well as the 5G evolution that&#13;<br \/>\nAxiata&#8217;s markets will soon embrace.
