The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlyou.sg\/\">Korean language school<\/a> experienced a&#13;<br \/>\nrelatively smooth transition to online classes last year, with the development&#13;<br \/>\nof online, face-to-face software, such as Zoom, providing the teachers with the&#13;<br \/>\nflexibility to customise their lessons with the same engagement and active&#13;<br \/>\ninteractions as an on-site classroom. This successful&#13;<br \/>\nswitch has encouraged the school to place greater emphasis on online learning&#13;<br \/>\nfollowing the latest restrictions announced by the government.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>The shift to online learning has made it possible for&#13;<br \/>\nsome students who have travelled abroad to continue their Korean learning&#13;<br \/>\njourney online. Despite initial concerns about a virtual classroom, reception&#13;<br \/>\nto the switch has been largely positive. Many students were encouraged by the&#13;<br \/>\nnumerous interactions between them and their teachers and the continuation of&#13;<br \/>\nthe non-conventional approach to their lessons.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Various on-site class activities focused on oral&#13;<br \/>\ninteraction have been successfully integrated into the online classes. For&#13;<br \/>\nexample, students are often paired into several groups to discuss and practise&#13;<br \/>\ntheir Korean together. This activity occurs multiple times in each lesson.&#13;<br \/>\nAdditionally, they are also tasked with creating presentation slides that they&#13;<br \/>\nhave to present to the class. Their classmates then take turns asking questions&#13;<br \/>\nabout their presentation afterwards. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>The teachers have also sought to incorporate several&#13;<br \/>\ngame activities such as role-play, where participants are assigned the roles of&#13;<br \/>\nshopkeeper and customer. The pair then have to communicate with each other in&#13;<br \/>\nKorean to mimic the selling and purchasing of daily goods in real life. Learning&#13;<br \/>\nalso extends beyond the walls of the virtual classrooms as the teachers have&#13;<br \/>\ncreated various group chat sessions to encourage students to communicate with&#13;<br \/>\neach other using the Korean expressions they learned in class. Even with online&#13;<br \/>\nlearning barriers, ONLYOU has continued to find ways to motivate students to&#13;<br \/>\npractise their Korean and clarify any doubts they have during their online&#13;<br \/>\nclasses. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>However, this change has also brought about various logistical hurdles&#13;<br \/>\nthat had to be navigated to ensure the shift occurred without a hitch. Every&#13;<br \/>\nstudent was required to download an e-learning platform to facilitate the&#13;<br \/>\nswitch to online learning. The teachers and students also had to get to grips&#13;<br \/>\nwith the new software and its various features due to their unfamiliarity with&#13;<br \/>\nthe platform. To resolve this issue, the school came up with an instructional&#13;<br \/>\nvideo guide and distributed it to the staff and students to assist them with&#13;<br \/>\nany problems they face with the software. The platform has also allowed the&#13;<br \/>\nstudents to inform their teachers when they require assistance via the &#8216;ask for&#13;<br \/>\nhelp&#8217; feature. This prompt has benefitted both parties as the nature of the&#13;<br \/>\nonline class made it challenging for the teachers to observe every student and&#13;<br \/>\nrespond promptly to any queries. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the switch to online learning has resulted in a change in the&#13;<br \/>\nschool&#8217;s teaching approach. In a classroom setting, the teachers often utilised&#13;<br \/>\nphysical resources, such as a whiteboard, to illustrate grammar rules and&#13;<br \/>\ndisplay useful information. However, upon realising the challenge in getting&#13;<br \/>\ntheir students to concentrate when faced with a cluttered screen, the teachers&#13;<br \/>\nhad to revise their teaching materials and ensure they are neatly organised to&#13;<br \/>\nreduce confusion and enhance their students&#8217; concentration. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Multiple learning resources, such as animation and&#13;<br \/>\nPowerPoint slides, are also utilised to capture students&#8217; attention and aid&#13;<br \/>\nlearning. In addition, the teachers have continued to incorporate popular&#13;<br \/>\nKorean songs and television dramas into their online lessons to spark interest,&#13;<br \/>\ngiven the students&#8217; past receptiveness to this learning method.
