Winners and shortlisted&#13;<br \/>\ncandidates will be eligible for a total of HK$1.2 million in prize money. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Some world-renowned names are sitting on the influential Jury Panel which&#13;<br \/>\ninclude&#13;<br \/>\n<b>Ms&#13;<br \/>\nTanya Cox<\/b>, Chair of the World&#13;<br \/>\nGreen Building Council; <b>Professor Jiang Yi, <\/b>Director of the Building&#13;<br \/>\nEnergy Research Centre of Tsinghua University<b>; Mr William McDonough, <\/b>architect&#13;<br \/>\nand globally recognised leader in sustainable development and design, and&#13;<br \/>\nfounding partner of William McDonough + Partners<b>;<\/b>&#13;<br \/>\nand <b>Ms Meaghan Lloyd<\/b>, Partner at Gehry Partners, the acclaimed firm&#13;<br \/>\nfounded by Pritzker Prize Laureate Frank Gehry.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>The effects of global warming are&#13;<br \/>\nalready stressing our ecosystem, so combating climate change, and reducing our carbon&#13;<br \/>\nfootprint has become a vitally important mission for the entire global community.&#13;<br \/>\nA special report published by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change&#13;<br \/>\n(IPCC) in 2018, stated that total man-made greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions need&#13;<br \/>\nto halve by 2030 and reach a <b>&#8220;net-zero&#8221;<\/b> position by around&#13;<br \/>\n2050 in order to limit global warming to less than 1.5 degrees and avoid a&#13;<br \/>\nclimate catastrophe for our planet.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>According to the <b>World Green&#13;<br \/>\nBuilding Council (WorldGBC)<\/b>, buildings currently account for 39% of energy-related&#13;<br \/>\ncarbon emissions globally. In densely populated Hong Kong, however, more than&#13;<br \/>\n60% of carbon emissions are ascribed to buildings, and 15% to 20% of the&#13;<br \/>\nlifecycle carbon footprint of buildings is attributable to construction.&#13;<br \/>\nReducing these figures through green building practices is therefore critical.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Advancing Net Zero&#8221; (ANZ) is a&#13;<br \/>\nworldwide initiative launched by the WorldGBC to promote net-zero carbon&#13;<br \/>\nbuildings. This is in line with the Hong Kong Government&#8217;s environmental target&#13;<br \/>\nto achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>The ANZ Ideas Competition consists&#13;<br \/>\nof two categories: <b>(i) Future Building <\/b>and<b> (ii) Existing Building<\/b>. <b>Ar.&#13;<br \/>\nAda Fung, Chairperson of the Organising Committee of the ANZ Ideas Competition<\/b>&#13;<br \/>\nsaid, &#8220;The overall aim is to stimulate innovative and valuable carbon reduction&#13;<br \/>\ninsights from multi-disciplinary professionals, raise public awareness, generate&#13;<br \/>\nnew ideas and solutions, enhance learning and knowledge sharing on Advancing&#13;<br \/>\nNet Zero, and to push the boundaries to design future-ready buildings and&#13;<br \/>\nretrofit existing building stock to advance net zero emissions economy by 2050.&#13;<br \/>\nThe Competition also aims to accelerate the building industry to adopt and&#13;<br \/>\ndevelop low\/zero carbon design and technologies, and to stimulate the reviews&#13;<br \/>\nof current regulations and code of practices to facilitate the development of eco-technology&#13;<br \/>\nwhere appropriate.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nMr Cheung Hau-wai, Chairman of the Hong Kong Green Building Council said, <\/b>&#8220;Hong Kong is one of the world&#8217;s top&#13;<br \/>\ntier metropolises and is famous for its high-rise architecture. Its subtropical&#13;<br \/>\nclimate with immense building density means it is crucial for us to implement&#13;<br \/>\nlow carbon strategies and generate energy-efficient design solutions for&#13;<br \/>\nbuildings.
