{"id":13408,"date":"2021-03-22T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-22T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eodishasamachar.com\/en\/2021\/03\/22\/accelerating-womens-economic-empowerment-webinar-the-post-covid-world-offers-new-models-of-economic-justice-and-empowerment-for-women\/"},"modified":"2021-03-22T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-22T13:00:00","slug":"accelerating-womens-economic-empowerment-webinar-the-post-covid-world-offers-new-models-of-economic-justice-and-empowerment-for-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eodishasamachar.com\/en\/2021\/03\/22\/accelerating-womens-economic-empowerment-webinar-the-post-covid-world-offers-new-models-of-economic-justice-and-empowerment-for-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Accelerating Women&#8217;s Economic Empowerment Webinar: The post-COVID world offers new models of economic justice and empowerment for women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n                            <!--<a class=\"format-txt\" href=\"{baseURL}\/View\/{release.id}?_download=1\">View this article in .txt format<\/a>--><\/p>\n<p>TAIPEI, TAIWAN &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.media-outreach.com\/\">Media OutReach<\/a> &#8211; 22 March 2021 &#8211; Organized&#13;<br \/>\nby Taiwan&#8217;s Foundation for Women&#8217;s Rights Promotion and Development and the&#13;<br \/>\nMinistry of Foreign Affairs, with support from the Taiwan Economic and Cultural&#13;<br \/>\nOffice in New York, the Accelerating Women&#8217;s Economic Empowerment Webinar,&#13;<br \/>\nwhich was held on 18 March, focused on policies and programs to help women&#13;<br \/>\nachieve equality in the post-pandemic future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img src=\"https:\/\/release.media-outreach.com\/release.php\/Images\/Thumb\/500x0\/134057\/photo.jpg#image-134057\" width=\"500\"\/><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\">Speakers of&#13;<br \/>\nthe Accelerating Women&#8217;s Economic Empowerment Webinar.<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Women are&#13;<br \/>\nbearing the brunt of the COIVD-19 crisis,&#8221; said Denise Scotto, vice president&#13;<br \/>\nof the International Federation of Women in Legal Careers, as she opened on Accelerating Women&#8217;s Economic Empowerment Webinar.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>However, the new models of working&#13;<br \/>\nfrom home, and greater access to technology and the internet may point to how&#13;<br \/>\nthe gender divide can be bridged.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>This was the message conveyed by&#13;<br \/>\nspeakers at the Accelerating Women&#8217;s Economic Empowerment webinar, which took place&#13;<br \/>\nparallel to the United Nations&#8217; Commission on the Status of Women and during&#13;<br \/>\nWomen&#8217;s History Month celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Headlining the event, Taiwan&#8217;s&#13;<br \/>\ndigital minister Audrey Tang discussed how to make the United Nations&#13;<br \/>\nSustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality work in Taiwan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Tang pointed out that Taiwan is&#13;<br \/>\nthe first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, equal pay day has come down to February 20, and over 41% of legislators in Taiwan&#8217;s parliament are&#13;<br \/>\nwomen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Taiwan&#8217;s first transgender&#13;<br \/>\nminister also testified that she had never suffered discrimination in her job.&#13;<br \/>\nHowever, there are still areas where Taiwan has much to do. &#8220;Less than a&#13;<br \/>\nquarter of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) students in tertiary education are women,&#8221; said Tang.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Taiwan&#8217;s achievements in controlling&#13;<br \/>\nthe pandemic have been well documented. But one aspect that has not been widely&#13;<br \/>\nreported is the gendered aspect to disease control.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Tang highlighted the example of a&#13;<br \/>\nTaiwanese boy who was teased for coming to school with a pink mask when medical&#13;<br \/>\nsupplies were being rationed. The boy called the government hotline to&#13;<br \/>\ncomplain, and the next day the health minister and his top officials all wore&#13;<br \/>\npink masks during the daily press briefing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Tang said, &#8220;The health minister&#13;<br \/>\nsaid it was fine for a boy to wear pink, and added that his favorite cartoon&#13;<br \/>\ncharacter was the Pink Panther.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Technological advances are also&#13;<br \/>\nhelping level the playing field for young women, said Tang, sharing one&#13;<br \/>\ninitiative against plastic straws started by a 16-year-old Taiwanese woman.&#13;<br \/>\n&#8220;She didn&#8217;t have to wait until she was 18 or join a political party,&#8221; said the&#13;<br \/>\ndigital minister, adding, &#8220;more and more young women and men are looking into&#13;<br \/>\ne-participation and co-creation across sectors to create their own&#13;<br \/>\ninitiatives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>The Swedish minister for gender&#13;<br \/>\nequality&#8217;s state secretary Karin Strand\u00e5s focused on applying a gender&#13;<br \/>\nperspective to government policies and budgeting. &#8220;We must also focus on the&#13;<br \/>\nrole of men and boys as drivers for change,&#8221; said Strand\u00e5s, &#8220;Men and boys in&#13;<br \/>\nall their diversity must be part of transforming gender norms and&#13;<br \/>\ninequality.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Responding to the pandemic,&#13;<br \/>\nStrand\u00e5s said, &#8220;It is about building a better world and a better future for&#13;<br \/>\neveryone.&#8221; Although it is possible for men to take as much parental leave as&#13;<br \/>\nwomen, Sweden has yet to achieve full equality in the workplace. &#8220;Reforms are&#13;<br \/>\nnecessary for women to enter the labor markets,&#8221; said Strand\u00e5s.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Strand\u00e5s noted the link between&#13;<br \/>\neconomic inequality and domestic violence. &#8220;It is harder to leave a violent&#13;<br \/>\nrelationship if you are dependent on your partner,&#8221; the state secretary said.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Taiwan&#8217;s ambassador at large Lin&#13;<br \/>\nChing-Yi spoke about the role of women in law making. &#8220;The more female&#13;<br \/>\nparticipation there is in politics, the more gender-based policy making there&#13;<br \/>\nwill be,&#8221; said Lin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Talking about the danger women&#13;<br \/>\nface on the frontline of the pandemic as nurses and cleaners, Lin said she was&#13;<br \/>\ninitially worried for their safety. Thankfully, Taiwan&#8217;s success in pandemic&#13;<br \/>\ncontrol has largely been down to gendered policy making. &#8220;All policies are&#13;<br \/>\nbased on gender equality,&#8221; said Lin, &#8220;so only ten nurses have been infected&#13;<br \/>\nwith COVID-19 in Taiwan.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Other speakers shared their&#13;<br \/>\nexperiences in advancing women&#8217;s economic rights and independence, investing in&#13;<br \/>\nwomen&#8217;s empowerment, and supporting marginalized women to earn, save money, and&#13;<br \/>\nimprove their health and wellbeing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Algene Sajery,&#13;<br \/>\nvice president of the Office of External Affairs at the US International&#13;<br \/>\nDevelopment Finance Corporation, outlined the Women&#8217;s Initiative which has&#13;<br \/>\ncatalyzed more than US$7 billion of investment in projects that are owned by&#13;<br \/>\nwomen, led by women, or provide a product or service that empowers women.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Iliriana&#13;<br \/>\nGashi, executive director of Kosova Women 4 Women, talked about her organization&#8217;s efforts to finance women&#13;<br \/>\neconomically affected by the pandemic, working together with the government and&#13;<br \/>\ninternational corporations to help women running small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Giving rights&#13;<br \/>\nand more economic power to women is good for men too. &#8220;We are one human family,&#13;<br \/>\nboth men and women,&#8221; said Scotto, &#8220;so all of humanity is empowered by&#13;<br \/>\nempowering women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13; <\/p>\n<p>Concluding the&#13;<br \/>\nsession, Lin said after the pandemic, global society will face new norms.
