Explore the Infinite Possibilities of Play and Design                            <\/p>\n<p>HONG KONG SAR &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.media-outreach.com\/\">Media OutReach<\/a> &#8211; 4 March 2021 &#8211;<b>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Play&#13;<br \/>\nAttention! <\/b>One may&#13;<br \/>\n&#8220;recognise play when one sees it&#8221;, yet one may not be able to describe it. Many&#13;<br \/>\nstill harbour the preconception that play is a waste of time for adults. Design&#13;<br \/>\nSpectrum, the public-facing platform of Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC), sponsored&#13;<br \/>\nby Create Hong Kong of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative&#13;<br \/>\nRegion, has launched its latest exhibition under the theme PLAY LIVES at 7&#13;<br \/>\nMallory Street. Opens to the public for free from now to 30 April 2021, the&#13;<br \/>\nexhibition takes visitors on a playful journey for them to rediscover the&#13;<br \/>\nfundamental concepts of play and design, and how the concepts complement each&#13;<br \/>\nother to better our futures. New Zealand play theorist Brian Sutton-Smith once quipped that &#8220;The&#13;<br \/>\nopposite of play is not work. The opposite of play is depression&#8221;. As Leclerc explains,<b> <\/b><b>&#8220;<\/b><b><i>While play generates&#13;<br \/>\nculture, design shapes culture: just about everything around us is designed. As&#13;<br \/>\na friendly &#8216;Trojan hobby horse&#8217;, play makes design accessible. Referring to&#13;<br \/>\nplay&#8217;s attributes enhances designers&#8217; practice because people are naturally apt&#13;<br \/>\nat play: realising design is like play makes it easier to understand design&#8230;&#13;<br \/>\nPlay allows design to connect to life more naturally, igniting creativity,&#13;<br \/>\nhence bettering design practice.&#8221;<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i>By showcasing play through a design perspective, PLAY LIVES extolls the&#13;<br \/>\nvalue of design in shaping contemporary play, and recognises the role of play&#13;<br \/>\nin enhancing design.<\/p>\n<p><b><u>PLAY LIVES SHOWTIME<\/u><\/b><b><u>: <\/u><\/b><b><u>A journey to explore play through design<\/u><\/b><b><u\/><\/b><\/p>\n<p>PLAY LIVES Exhibition showcases more than 90&#13;<br \/>\nplay and design projects from Hong Kong, the Mainland, Japan, Korea, and the&#13;<br \/>\nUSA, offering visitors a 360-degree view on the types and functions of&#13;<br \/>\nplaythings, and unveiling the cultural value of designing play for everyday&#13;<br \/>\nlife. Visitors will be able to chart their own maps of the meaning of play to&#13;<br \/>\nascertain the value of design for play: <b>Room 1<\/b><b> <\/b>showcases eight whimsical fixtures which&#13;<br \/>\ninvite visitors to explore the attributes of play through engaging experiences,&#13;<br \/>\nthus toying with &#8220;Design Play DNA&#8221;. Building on visitors&#8217; explorations in Room&#13;<br \/>\n1, <b>Room 2<\/b> demonstrates&#13;<br \/>\nthe value of play and design and how they shape cultures through four displays:&#13;<br \/>\ndemonstrating the relevance of play and design in shaping culture: <b><i>IMAGE Play Lives<\/i><\/b>, a street newspaper stall; <b><i>OBJECT&#13;<br \/>\nPlay Lives<\/i><\/b>, a&#13;<br \/>\ntoy storefront display shelf; <b><i>BODY Play Lives<\/i><\/b>, along a two-tiered circular catwalk; and <b><i>SPACE Play Lives<\/i><\/b>, an open virtual skyscraper. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Room 3<\/b>, the <b>&#8220;<\/b><b>Cabinet of Design Play&#13;<br \/>\nCurios<\/b><b>&#8220;<\/b>, stages seven critical design<b> <\/b>projects to showcase how play enhances designers&#8217;&#13;<br \/>\nspeculative practice. Visitors can learn to appreciate the value of play and&#13;<br \/>\ndesign as the exhibits address issues such as information and&#13;<br \/>\ntechnology, environment, identity, and corporate culture, and witness how play&#13;<br \/>\ncan create a desirable future. In <b>Room 4<\/b>, the &#8220;<b>Playroom<\/b>&#8220;, displays works created by local&#13;<br \/>\nparticipants at 6 pre-exhibition &#8220;playshops&#8221; to illustrate how people interpret&#13;<br \/>\nplay in different ways. Finally, at the <b>Toymaking Playbench<\/b> in Room 4, visitors of all ages can create their own toys using components&#13;<br \/>\nobtained from a capsule vending machine, such as PLA plastic clips manufactured&#13;<br \/>\nonsite by a tabletop 3D printer (sponsored by beets3d.com).<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><u><a name=\"_headingh.gjdgxs\"\/><b>Rolling&#13;<br \/>\nFun &#8212; Community Playground: Explore the Tube &amp; Wave Zone to Ignite Your Creativity<\/b><\/u><\/p>\n<p> Invited by the curators of  PLAY LIVES Exhibition ,  <b>Making on&#13;<br \/>\nLoft<\/b>, a local social design and research team will present their&#13;<br \/>\ncommissioned work <b>Rolling Fun &#8212; Community Playground<\/b> at the&#13;<br \/>\nPublic Open Space of 7 Mallory Street from 31 March to 11 April 2021.&#13;<br \/>\nComprising a <b>Tube Zone<\/b>, <b>Wave Zone<\/b> and <b>Play Share Kiosk<\/b>, the&#13;<br \/>\nplayground will open for free admission during the said period. During which,&#13;<br \/>\npublic visitors and residents in the neighbourhood can drop by anytime to play&#13;<br \/>\nor to relax a little. With game instructions inside the tubes, &#8220;<b>Tube Zone<\/b>&#8221; suggests&#13;<br \/>\nvarious ways of play from battle games to ball games. At &#8220;<b>Play Share Kiosk<\/b>&#8220;,&#13;<br \/>\nvisitors can find simple playthings like balls and rackets for enjoying fun&#13;<br \/>\ncompetition games. &#8220;<b>Wave&#13;<br \/>\nZone<\/b>&#8221; features wavy long wooden benches for resting, jogging or&#13;<br \/>\nhosting remote-controlled car races. Visitors are also invited to design new&#13;<br \/>\nways to play and give suggestions on best uses of the playground.
