Bhubaneswar, 5/6 ( Odisha Samachar/Abhisek Mohanty) : The World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June. It is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations (UN) stimulates worldwide awareness of the Environment and enhances public attention. Airports authority of India, Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar celebrated World Environment Day with enthusiasm and gusto.
U.N. Behera, Additional General Secretary, Government of Odisha, inaugurated the event by lighting the lamp. Niten Chandra, Special Secretary, GA Department; G. Mathi Vathanan, Commisioner cum Secretary, Commerce & Transport Department; Dr. A.K. Padhee, Commissioner cum Secretary, Tourism; Usha Padhee, IAS, Department of School & Mass Education, Vivek Pattanayak, IAS (Retd.), Ex Aviation Secretary, Bijoy Sahoo, Chairman, Sai International School, Viswaraj Patnaik, eminent speaker & columnist, Saubhagya Mohapatra, Ex. Director, Mayfair Hotels & Resorts, had graced the occasion.
After the inaugural lighting of the lamp, all the dignitaries were invited to sign the Signature
Campaign Board and were presented with a sapling each. U.N. Behera and Sharad Kumar,
Airport Director, distributed saplings to the arriving passengers and encouraged them to sign the
campaign and take an oath of saving the environment by nurturing the sapling gifted to them. The saplings distributed were mainly Pulanga, Jamun, Sonar, Amla, Ashoka, to name a few.
A display of the drawings/paintings of the drawing competition held earlier, by the children of
AAI staffs, was also put on display. Passengers, both arriving and departing, were touched by the
gesture and innovativeness of the entire Campaign and congratulated Sharad Kumar and his
team, for doing their bit in saving and spreading awareness about the environment. Children were seen enjoying the thought of owning their own trees. The idea behind this event was to bring awareness amongst the passengers, airline staff, CISF & other stake-holders to sensitized about the protection of environment by planting trees & adopting energy conservation methods.
It is also informed that, Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar has been recently
accredited ISO14001: 2004 on Environment Management System. It is our endeavor to enhance efforts to reduce carbon foot print & use technology for eco friendly sustainable development towards Green Airport. We have developed Water Harvesting System, Sewage Treatment Plant & 100 KW solar power plant, replacement of conventional fittings with power saver LED light
fittings & planned many more activities towards clean & green Airport.
