Bhubaneswar ( Odisha Samachar Bureau ) – Since 2000, to remind the devastation of the Super Cyclone 1999 among the people of the state and to get themselves prepared to face any kind of natural disaster in future, every year on 29th October Disaster Preparedness Day & National Day for Disaster Reduction has been observed in Odisha.
Disaster Management is one of the core areas of the Indian Red Cross Society under which Odisha State Branch has been implementing different preparedness and response activities in the state. Odisha State Branch has been observing the day in all 65 Multipurpose Cyclone Shelters as well as participating in the state level function organized by the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), Govt. of Odisha at Jayadev Bhavan, Bhubaneswar. This year the theme has been decided by Govt. of Odisha is “Youth & Disaster Management”.
In the state level meeting at Jayadev Bhavan, Bhubaneswar Govt. of Odisha felicitated two Red Cross Multipurpose Cyclone Shelter communities i.e Gokharkuda in Ganjam district & Khurantatutha in Jagatsinghpur district for best shelter maintenance & management committee. On this occasion, Secretaries of the Shelter & Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) of both Multipurpose Cyclone Shelters received the Memento, Cash Award of Rs. 10,000/- each along with a certificate from Hon’bel Chief Minister, Odisha.
Hon’ble Chief Minister, Odisha, Hon’ble Minister, Revenue & D.M, Odisha, Additional Chief Secretary to Govt. R&D.M, Odisha and other govt. officials visited the exhibition organized by Red Cross. Disaster Preparedness equipments used by the shelter communities and non food relief items were displayed and demonstrated by the shelter volunteers at the state level exhibition at Jayadev Bhavan. Honorary Secretary, IRCS-OSB, Honorary Joint Secretary, Youth Red Cross Officer, NDWRT, Red Cross members, Youth Red Cross & Junior Red Cross Counsellors and volunteers took part in the state level observance.
