“We sealed the steel plant on Monday alleging non-compliance with the provisions of the Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 . Before closing the plant, we had issued the plant authorities notices twice to build Effluent Treatment Plant(ETP) and proper place to keep . But the plant officials , did not obey our order for which we sealed the plant “, said Dr Anup Mallick the regional officer of SPCB in Kalinganagar.
The plant which employed around 1500 people was sealed in the presence of the Tahasildar of Sukinda and other officials . In the recent past many times large numbers of agitated locals demanded before the SPCB members for the immediate shutdown of the plant.
The emission released by the plant made the life of locals miserable . Large numbers of locals have been suffering from health problems due to air pollution of the plant in these areas for which we are delighted after the authorities closed down the pollutant plant, said Jyotirmay dhal of Jakhapura.
When contacted Ranjan Das the collector of Jajpur said “ SPCB closed the Visa steel plant, as the plant trampled all the environmental norms . We have already issued notices to all the 12 steel and other plants to obey the environment laws”.
