Bhubaneswar, 05/11/2017 ( Odisha Samachar / Abhisek Mohanty )- : Development Commissioner R. Balakrishnan on Sunday asked the district collectors to intensify awareness campaigns in order to check instances of crops being set on fire and farmer suicides in the state.
At a review meeting, Balakrishnan highlighted that pest attack is a natural calamity and compensation will be provided to the affected farmers as per relief code.
According to a report on crop loss submitted to state government by Special Relief Commissioner, 1, 78, 937 hectares of agricultural land of nine districts has been affected by pest attack in the state.
Standing crops in as many as 8, 211 villages of 92 blocks and 19 urban local bodies have been affected in Bargarh, Sambalpur, Nuapada, Ganjam, Balangir, Kalahandi, Sonepur, Bhadrak and Koraput districts. There has been 33 to 50 per cent loss in about 1, 12, 000 hectares of land while 20 blocks in Ganjam district have been worst affected.
Apart from that, 14 blocks in Balangir and Koraput, 12 in Kalahandi and 11 in Bargarh districts have also been affected by pests, the report revealed.
