Bhubaneswar, 6/1 ( Odisha Samachar/ Abhisek Mohanty ): In a bid to orient the media about their role in reporting child protection issues and on being sensitive towards children in difficult circumstances, a workshop on ‘Role of Media in Child Protection’ has been organised by Odisha State Child Protection Society (OSCPS), Women & Child Development Department, Government of Odisha at Mission Shakti Bhawan, Bhubaneswar on Wednesday here.
The Director of OSCPS Ravindra Pratap Singh inaugurated the programme and welcomed the participants. While addressing the participants, Singh highlighted the significance of such workshop in spreading awareness on the provisions for care and protection of children under the JJ Act and child rights. He emphasised on the need to spread awareness amongst people on child rights. Further, need for bringing any violation to the notice of the DCPUs & CWCs established in each district and ensuring privacy / confidentiality in reporting.
This was followed by a technical session by experts. The plenary was chaired by Child Protection Specialist Laxminarayan Nanda. Eminent Child Right Activist Isidore Phillips from Hyderabad oriented the participants about the evolution of Child Rights concept with mention of constitutional provisions and legal instruments for safeguarding rights of children.
Programme Manager of OSCPS Manoj Kumar Tripathy presented an overview of the Integrated Child Protection Scheme to the participants. A monograph on sensitivity and ethical reporting practice was presented by Dr. Mrinal Chaterjee, Director, Indian Institute of Mass Communication. The programme ended with valedictory address by the Programme Manager, OSCPS with an appeal to the media to act as a bridge between the community and service providing institutions.
OSCPS Programme Officer Bina Hariyani, ADEO Sabitabala Mohapatra, ADEO Bishnu Prasad Pattanayak and other officials of OSCPS assisted in organisation of this workshop. Journalists, columnists, reporters and media personnel associated with print, television & web media of Odisha, as well as, All India Radio participated in this programme.
