Bhubaneswar ,01/07 (Odisha Samachar Bureau) – Elder abuse is a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was launched on June 15, 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO). Every Year 15th June is being celebrated Nationwide as ‘World Elder Abuse Awareness Day’ to Stop Elder Abuse . Elder abuse – whether physical, psychological, financial, sexual or a form of neglect – is a violation of older people’s human rights. Recently on last 15th June it was observed in Odisha by the HelpAge India , a National level voluntary organization for the awareness of the people.
On the Other hand Community police service ‘Ama police’ in Odisha was launched by the Chief Minister Sri Naveen Patnaik on 3rd June 2013 to act as a bridge of the gap between the police and public . In this service a Police officer of the rank of ASI, Havildar or Constable would act as a beat police officer and contact each family in the beat area and be accessible for redressal of problems. ‘Ama police’ system will be operative in the level of each Police Station and District level.
Inspite of these , Senior citizens or Elder peoples are being harashed , mentally and physically tortured and not getting justice from the administration. peoples are frequently running to the Police Station even meeting with the District Police Superintendent but getting no help from them. This type of incident occurred recently in Kendrapada District of Odisha. One Retired person named Kabira Charan Nayak (62) Son of late Gajendra Nath Nayak of Village – Kahana , Post- Narada, Vis – Tyandakura, P.S – Patakura , District Kendrapada is being mentally, physically, psychologically and financially tortured by Subhransu Sekhar Nayak, Himansu Sekhar Nayak and Puspalata alias mataji since last three months. These three persons are his relative. They are demanding money and frequently throwing ordure , for which the Couple are being mentally and psychologically tortured . They are unable to live, sleep and take food even in the rooms. Sri Nayak lodged three FIRs in Patakura Police Station i.e on 02.04.2013, 01.05.2013 and on 19.05.2013. But Patakura Police faild to take necessary appropriate steps required, for which Smt. Nayak attempted twice for suicide . At last Sri Nayak appealed to the District Police Superintendent on Dt 24.05.2013 and could not find any help or justice. Now Smt. Nayak decided to meet the Chairperson of the State Women Commission .
