Bhubaneswar, 22/5 ( Odisha Samachar/Abhisek Mohanty): International Day for Biological Biodiversity has a great significance as it encourages masses by creating awareness among them for conserving biodiversity, said Vice Chancellor, Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology Prof. Manoranjan Kar, while inaugurating a Conference on ‘Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development in Odisha’ organized by Odisha Biodiversity Board in collaboration with Regional Plant Resource Centre at Hotel New Marrion on Thursday here as a state level celebration of International Day for Biological Diversity in Odisha.
“We are facing a crisis of land, water and power. This is a matter of grave concern. By conserving biodiversity we not only ensure that our surroundings are richer and more diverse, but we secure the resources that will continue to bring about improvement in the quality of human life”, said Kar.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) S.S. Srivastava stressed that biodiversity is essential for healthy living. People depend on biodiversity for their sustenance. He said that the state government has taken various steps for conservation of biodiversity.
Member-Secretary, Odisha Biodiversity Board Shashi Paul said “Biodiversity is under severe threat from a wide variety of factors including habitat loss and fragmentation, overexploitation of natural resources, the spread of harmful introduced species, pollution and climate change. Biodiversity can only be conserved if involvement of all the stakeholders is ensured”.
“Although conservation has not yet succeeded in bringing about dramatic and favourable changes in the environment, it has had a beneficial influence in government and other institutions. The state of knowledge, access to expertise and awareness of the problems and how to deal with them, has been greatly enhanced over the past few decades. We are in a far better position to make real strides towards conserving biodiversity than ever before. The recommendations/suggestions made out of the deliberations during the conference would be useful for formulation of strategies for conservation of the biological diversity of Odisha and also address livelihood & development issues”, speakers said.
On the occasion, a book entitled “Biological Diversity of Regional Plant Resource Centre, Bhubaneswar” was unveiled.
